In other crash related news, I was first responder in a motorcycle crash today. Dude will be okay, but damn, human bodies are fragile and adding a motorcycle, youth and inexperience to the mix really shortens your chances of leading a full and rewarding life.
Agreed. Fiddling around with engines has been a waste of Carmack (at least for the last 10 years). Now he gets to makes as much of a difference with a new platform as he did back with Wolf3D and Doom1 and 2.
The word from Bethesda, publisher of id Software to Kotaku is this:
We're trying to reconcile the two, as it's unclear just what Carmack's role at id will be going forward. When asked straight-up if Carmack was gone form id, a Bethesda rep replied, "No, he is not."
UPDATE: Bethesda/id clarifies: "John will spend time working out of Oculus as part of his role with them, but he will also continue to work at id."
I kind of want a new chapter added to the book. His life long dream is happening, he can make a huge impact there. And I do believe VR will eventually transcend gaming. I cannot wait for this thing. First console to have full OR support wins, Sony needs to come out and fully support it

Id think carmack didn't leave and technically he probably didnt but in reality his heart is elsewhere, he will use Id in any way just to keep face but his real focus will be on the rift. This is so masters of doom, he will probably shit out a new engine for id while in the shower and then get back to work on rift full time.
Yep, that would be cool. I'd really like Carmack to have a second act, Romero too for that matter. As it is, as birlliant as they both are, the sheen has come off their star over the last 15 years.
