This generation has been absolutely terrible in my opinion. As someone that doesn't like to play online, and isn't a fan of open world games with padding, filler and micro transactions I'm struggling to have much fun.


Technically consoles are the strongest they've been, and with release of even more powerful consoles on the horizon things have never looked so good technically. But in terms of actual fun, which is the reason I like to play games, then this generation has been absolute shit. Obviously this is my personal opinion (which I'm entitled to). I found the Super Nintendo, N64 and PS2 provided 100's more hours of fun and variety than this gen.


In terms of fun this gen it's been Nintendo that have provided the most enjoyment, pick up and play games where the actual gameplay is enjoyable, as opposed to forced online, open world games with micro management rpg systems and full of filler.


Honestly nowadays with most modern games if I take a short break from them, I almost need a refresher to remember what the hell I'm doing or where I'm supposed to go. I don't remember it ever being as bad on the N64, or even PS2.


Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate that there have been some really incredible games technically, and if you're someone that loves playing online, you've probably never been happier.


But for "offline" gamers wanting pick up and play games it's certainly not a good time to own a console.


So am I alone in thinking this? Anyone else think this gen is actually not that good? Or is it the greatest generation of gaming you've ever experienced?!

Because all I've heard for the first 2 years is that the hardware is great, but there are no good games to be had.  

This generation is fine. It's super slow moving though due to development time. The games are still fun.

I think this generation has been quite good so far. Could use a few more JRPGs but they are coming and the variety now has been fine.

My son is playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Wii.  I'm still amazed at the sheer brilliance of these levels.  They are just amazing.  The game is jaggy and fuzzy as hell in non hd, but it's still a 10 in my book with the phenomenal level design.  Oh Nintendo, where is our new, amazing Mario?  Super Mario 3D Wotld was great, but it doesn't hold a candle to the Galaxy games.  Where is the great level design?  Do I have to get a NX for the next Mario?
