It's been about 5 and a half years since I did my last Top 100 list. Due to my OCD and compulsion to constantly create lists in my head I think it's time for an all new Top 100.

My first thought was to reevaluate the old top 100, but fuck it, it's easier to pick 100 new games that I didn't have on the list last time. In the past 5 and a half years I've played more than I usually have, largely due to COVID. And in that time I've played a lot of new great games.

Plus, when I made the last list, I avoided adding multiple games from the same franchises. So I can dip back into the Dragon Quest pool and a few others.

Anyway stay tuned. Starting tomorrow we're doing this shit again.

Sounds like something the fan commuity would do.

Now that you say that, it's very possible it's out there. It's always interesting to see just how many fan translations are out there, even for games that have already had a translation, and someone just wants to fix even a few minor details.

Oh, and it is part of that SNK collection. It's definitely worth a go one weekend. Though I would recommend having some sort of guide to play along with. Makes the experience a little more fair.

#57 - Don't Starve

Don%27t_Starve.PNG

World if you believe a multiverse exists, then somewhere out there is a world where we have jetpacks, World Peace, and Donald Trump is living out his darkest secret dream as a fry cook working in a McDonald's in Moscow. However, in the reality we are in, the most interesting thing we have is somebody said, "I'd like to make a survival game that looks like it came out of Tim Burton's sketchbook."

Yep. Not all realities are going to be winners.

Alternate reality jokes aside, Don't Starve really is a fun game though surprisingly intense. You're not just gathering supplies, and trying to Craft tools and materials. You're fighting the elements. The seasons change, so you can start out in the summer while you build your fort only to realize you don't have enough wood to endure a winter. Plus you have to watch your mental health. As that slips, you start to see shadows and can eventually die of fright if you're not careful. And of course there's pigmen carrying Spears. Got to watch out for them.

I've actually bought this game twice. Once on the Wii U and a second time on my tablet. That tablet version helped me save some sanity on a family vacation where Wi-Fi wasn't available and most of my other games couldn't self-verify through the Play store. But the good people who gave us Don't Starve are of the more open-minded opinion that once you buy it, do whatever you want. And God bless them for it. Losing sanity in the game helped me not lose sanity around my family members.

#56 - Tetris 99

I used to believe I was an amazing Tetris player. I based this belief on the experiences I have had over the years of defeating my friends in head-to-head battles as well as having higher scores than them. It turned out my friends were just shitty, and I was just beating schmucks.

I suppose I wasn't really that bad at Tetris 99. I won a time or two or often found myself in the top 10, but the experience was humbling all the same. Humbling but maddeningly fun. Of all the battle royale games that came before or since, I wouldn't have expected this one to be so much fun.

Hell it's even fun to watch. Keeping an eye on the screens of the other players -- watching who is winning and who is soon to be doomed -- is far more entertaining (in an admittedly sadistic way) than I expected. And let's face it, when a game is entertaining even when you're not playing, that's when you know you found something special.

I've played Tetris for decades and I'm still awful at it. I'm lucky if I get over 100K points once out of every 10 attempts. Still love it, though. Tetris 99 was too much for me.

I think that Tetris99 is my most played game on Switch. And unlike you mortals, my skills are legit. Am I saying that right? Anyhow, my victory rate is about 3%. Go me!

Actually, the kids today would say "peak." That's what I've learned from streaming my games. Anything great is considered peak.

#55 - Guacamelee!

If you look at the record books, there has probably never been a professional wrestler as popular or more beloved by a nation as El Santo. In Mexico he was a modern-day folk hero, and when he died over 10,000 people went to his funeral. I'm afraid Hulk Hogan will be lucky if he has a dozen show up. And you know what? It's a goddamn shame we don't have a video game based on him. It might even be a bigger shame that there's just overall a lack of games that feature luchadores or traditional Mexican folklore. The world is worse off for it. But at least we can say we've got Guacamelee.

The game is a well crafted but pretty typical metroidvania. However, you don't notice that because the developers put so much polish into it. The Mexican folk aesthetic is so underutilized that the game feels fresh no matter where you go. And instead of typical power-ups or items that allow you to progress further into the world, it's done using wrestling moves. Also you get to turn into a chicken. And that's only a good thing.

Metroidvania's or really a dime a dozen these days so it takes a special one to stand out. Guacamelee definitely stands out. If you're a fan of the genre and you haven't gotten around to playing this, you have missed out.

I just bought the sequel. I didn't finish the first.

I was enjoying it till I hit this chamber with ridiculous difficulty.

As much as I loved the original, I never felt the need to play the sequel. It was all nicely wrapped up, and adding more to it just seemed unnecessary.
