Most of you don't know this about me, but I really do.
In the post-PS2 era I mean.
What they do is a relentless pursuit of technical excellence regardless of the cost or more rational, commercial considerations. Part of why I admire Sony is why I hate Nintendo.
Whilst Nintendo cuts corners here and there, Sony goes the whole hog, sometimes too much and too far which hurts the bottom line.
I mean I know Sony has a reason to push 3D, as a consumer electronics company they have a bunch of 3DTVs they want to sell to people. Most of us won't have 3DTVs for quite a few years, I'm guessing now that we've already upgraded to HDTVs. But think about this, in 4-5 years time when you finally have a 3DTV at a reasonable price, all these PS3 games you own, suddenly you will be able to play them in 3D. They have essentially future proofed a lot of titles right now, here in the present.
Blu-ray is pretty cool too. I don't care about Bluray on PS3 for movies, I prefer dedicated players - but I mean all these trilogy HD packs the PS3 is getting is because they can fit all these titles on one Bluray disc. I don't see anyone doing this for the 360.
It's a shame that PS3 was so expensive and so late. It meant that by the time the PS3 came out the year old 360 was already discounted in price and had a healthier software library behind it. I guess part of the reason the PS3 launched late IIRC was because of Bluray. So I guess the technical benefit hurt the bottom line as I said.
I love how Sony are adapting these PSP games as downloads for PS3, coding them in HD and adding 3D to them too. It's not something I see Nintendo ever doing. Sony seem to want to push things even if they don't neccesarily make commercial sense. The PSVita looks like a powerhouse handheld when time and time again it's been proved that power means nothing in the handheld arena. I admire that they try and I suspect they might do the same for PS4. I'm excited to see what they come up with, even if I don't get to sample it because of various reasons, cost, release dates, the damn Dualshock controller - which I hate.
BTW, anyone have any good pics or reviews for decent 3rd party PS3 controllers that are a little more like GC or 360 controllers?
I also don't like how angular it is. The GC controller has a tiny penis C-stick and a tiny little d-pad. But ergonomically the shape and buttons were perfectly comfortable to me. Especially the curved shoulder buttons and shell shape.
Well Yoda, I guess you have your answer.
