I've officially been using the PS3 for 24 hours so I wanted to go ahead and post my impressions of all I've done with it thus far.
As far as the tech goes itself it is very impressive, but damn does it ever come with an annoying price. As soon as it's all hooked up do I get to play it? Nope. System updates..... I really despise system updates. And if that isn't bad enough having to update for games as well? Fuck.... I know the arguement that PC's have been having gamers do that for some time, but is that really an excuse? If so, fantastic... consoles are now picking up the worst traits of PC games. Just what we needed.
Once that all got out of the way, I booted up Super Street Fighter IV. Love it. Absolutely love it! Tatsunoko vs. Capcom was good, but not this good. Sadly I'm having to relearn the game almost from scratch it seems. Back in the day (aka 1996) I was a pretty damned ferocious player. Fast forward to almost 15 years later and that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I lost in the 2nd or 3rd round each time I played. Finally I picked up Sagat and cruised through almost until I got to the end with no problems. At least the old standby's are still reliable. I do like the game a lot though. I'm not a huge fan of the art style, but I will concede it looks really good in motion. And the gameplay is excellent. I've missed having a good fighter. Can't wait till I'm good enough again to fight online.
After a few hours of that I went ahead and downloaded a few games. Pac-Man Championship Edition DX and Flower. Both have been nothing short of excellent. I've played Flower a few times before but this was the first time I was able to really just sit down and play for a long stretch. Love the 6-axis controls for that. Works perfectly. Makes me think that a NiGHTS to Dreams game would be perfect with that kind of control scheme.
Pac-Man however has been THE game so far. I knew I'd enjoy it, but not this much. I think I've spent more time with this than anything else. My top 3 games of the year will have to be re-thought because of this game. My first reaction was not real good as I thought the game was too easy, but I was mistakenly comparing it to old school Pac-Man. Sooooooooo wrong. Once I realized what the game was and how to play it, it became my new drug of choice. So far I've done well, and have broken into the top 20% in scores for the 5 minute version. Until I'm Top 5% though I won't be happy.
Anyway gotta go back, so I'll chat with you gents later.
I'm not a fan of the game, but in all fairness, I've never played a MGS game. I played the first one on the NES and that's pretty much where my experience with the series ends.
Dude, you are missing out...I don't know....what?
I know, I know. One day I may finally give it a shot. Then again I've been saying that for a decade and it hasn't happened, so probably not.
I finally got into the last of my games last night, Valkyria Chronicles. Holy crap.... this game is amazing. I am kicking myself hard for waiting so long to play it now. I sat down to just play it for a few minutes to maybe get through the tutorial and before I knew it an hour went by. It does a great job of taking the strategy genre and combining it with some real action gameplay. And the presentation for all of it is excellent. It's original and gorgeous. Love it. The only complaint I have at this point is that there's a little too much story. Seems like there's almost a 50:50 ratio of gameplay and cutscreens. Hopefully that'll lessen as time goes on.
Actually, it kind of remains that way. Fortunately, it's a pretty good story with a couple of cool moments.
It's one of the finest games the PS3 has to offer as an exclusive. I hope you get to try it out soon.
I'm looking forward to tonight when I can block off about 3 or 4 hours and just sit and lose myself in the game for a while. I haven't been jonesing to play a game this bad in quite a while.
