Last week I decided to get a new power cord for my Gamecube. The motivation wasn't so much wanted to play my GC games, but to try and keep my son away from the Wii, which he has recently gotten very interested in due to his discovery of Wii Music. The game is like crack with that kid. He's really into all things having to do with music so being able to play dozens of instruments and make videos is pretty much his idea of heaven. He never stops playing on his own either. Daddy usually has to pry the controller out of his hand and then gets accused of cruelty in the form of, "YOU'RE A MEAN DADDY!!! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!"
So even without that I figured there'd be something on the Cube for him to play. He likes Mario a lot, but I don't really have any Mario games for the Cube. What I do have however is a shitload of Sonic games. Sonic Heroes, Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Adventure DX, and Sonic Adventure II. He knows a little about Sonic because he has a habit of stealing his sister's copy of Mario & Sonic at the Winter Games for her DS.
Turned out to work, he's happy to play Sonic. Unfortunately it took him a while to figure out the basic controls (heaven forbid a 3 year old sit down and listen to daddy explain). I was kind of surprised by that, but as I think about it the DS and Wii were made for people who had no idea of how to play video games, so the transition to a traditional controller was tough for him.
After about a week he finally figured it out, and today he can sort of make his way around the games. He's not good, but he can get around and play through the easiest levels and he's happy with that. Of all the Sonic games he seems to enjoy Sonic Heroes the most. That surprised me. I expected him to play the old school games on the Mega Collection since they'd be easier to control. But nope, it's all about Sonic Heroes - though sadly the team he plays with is either the cutesy team with Amy, Cream and Big the Cat and even worse... Team Chaotix or whatever that team with the Alligator and a bunch of other fucked up characters is called. Guess that means no one likes Sonic anymore.
One last note though, as much as he seems to like the game it still comes back to the music. He's just as often going to the game's jukebox mode and just dancing to the music.
