So I just picked up a copy of the game, played for about half an hour...well, I don't know what else I can say, because Vader's pretty much summed it up. It looks fucking great, plays just as well, though I'm trying to get used to all the crap that's on screen and the way QTE's are implemented in the game. Makes a hell of a first impression, that's for sure.

Last night I had another marathon session and it had some of the mist spectacular setpieces I have ever seen, stuff on a scale that has never been done before. Plus there were some great puzzles, one that is like portal. I find this game to be even more balanced between action and other stuff be it puzzles or platforming than GoW2. I just got the last weapon in the game and it is so cool. Each weapon besides Hades' feels very different and useful. All the tweaks they made to the combat are great, this is definetely the most refined in the series in terms of combat.

My biggest issue is that I wish they let me explore that combat. When there is action there doesn't seem to be enough of it. The enemy combination they throw at you seem very simple to me. In GoW2 they would mix up all sorts of enemies, not just a bunch of easy ones with a hard guy, they would mix all sorts of harder enemies together. Also many battles in GoW2 had you fighting in the middle of a puzzle, or protecting someone, or doing something like pulling a block while fighting. So far I can recall one maybe two sections like that in GoW3. They have all these cool enemies and I feel I hardly see any of them, way too many zombie and skeleton guys.

That is a minor issue, me just wanting to fight harder guys. The game does everything right.

You want harder guys eh? Leooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Is there a hard option in the menu? difficulty I mean.

All the bosses, except the giant scorpion, are great.

I loved the giant scorpion. There were some issues with it but a very well done and actually hard boss fight.

Beat the game last night after another long session, I did not go to bed until I finished it. The final boss was a pain in the ass, still a great boss fight though. The last third of the game was simply brilliant. It was as if the game read my last post and made the game exactly how I wanted it to be. The final hours throw all sorts of insane combinations of enemies in massive setpieces at you, just like GoW2 did. It mixes these action segments with genius puzzles, they come back to back, the pacing is perfection. It is a series of events that raised the game to a different level, a level where I can finally say that yeah it is better than GoW2. As I was in the middle of these crazy battles the tweaks to the combat system really shined, for once it actually felt almost like it could hang with the big boys on combat system alone. I actually wish they explored the combat system a bit more, had more sections of different kinds of enemies where you have to be switching weapons and using items to be effective.

The ending will be one of the most talked about endings this gen. I felt everything after the final boss battle was interesting, they do some really cool stuff. I was totally satisfied, that is how you freaking end a trilogy. When the credits were rolling a had that same feeling of satisfaction you get after watching a great movie for the first time. This game is so well made, you can feel the effort and the love put into this project in every aspect of the game. How can people say games aren't art, aren't like movies. I guarantee that this new Clash of the Titans movie won't even be half the experience that GoW3 is, hell I bet GoW3 even looks better. Nyaa So I finish GoW3 with extreme appreciation at everyone that made the game, a hell of a job.

I finished it once and only dabbled in the challenge mode which seems very simple once again, only like 7 challenges, are they saving for DLC or something. My first thoughts on the overall game is that it is the best GoW game but not by much. This is no where near the jump that GoW2 was to GoW1, this is more of a refinement of GoW2. All the tweaks done to the combat and item system worked beautifully, I can't find one complaint with the combat system that wasn't already there before, every addition is an improvement. I only wish they actually let you explore all those tweaks more, only a few battles at the end explore the full range of the combat. Think about this, how many Chimera's do you fight in the entire game, I counted three. Such a cool new enemy and you fight three of them, come on. Then there are the puzzles which are some of the best in the series and again they don't feel like they reached their full potential. You know the first puzzle in a series of more complex puzzles is always like a tutorial puzzle. It is a way to familiarize yourself with how the future puzzles will work. Well all the puzzles in this game feel like an introductory puzzle for something so much bigger. There are three very different types of puzzles that could have fit an entire dungeon in a Zelda game and GoW3 only uses it for one room. It mixes the action and the puzzles but it is almost afraid to go the extra step in fear that it looses its thrill a minute very strictly paced nature.

I can't really say much of anything bad cause it does almost everything right. There is not one boring second of the game, nothing that feels out of place or felt like a bad idea. It is has an excellent length, took me about 12-13 hours. From start to finish it is non-stop quality and yet it feels like a safe sequel.

So this is how I rank the series right now in different categories:

Gameplay (meaning how it controls, moves and such): GoW3>GoW2>GoW1
Bosses: GoW3 > GoW2 > GoW1
Story: GoW3 > GoW1 > GoW2
Action setpieces: GoW2 > GoW 3 > GoW1
Puzzles: GoW3 > GoW2 > GoW1

What are the collectables that say "you can use this after you beat the game" for? Do they just unlock the extra modes and costumes when you're done?

They are like cheats, full health, infinite magic, stuff like that. If you use them you disable trophies. There is one unlockable costume and the challange of the gods is very simple. Not much to unlock in this game.

I hated the ending.  I read through the game's story and watched a few collections of the video portions of the game and the ending was crap. On one hand I will admit it works and wrapped things up well enough, but I just didn't think Kratos deserved it. He was a bad person and I wanted him to go out in a bad way. I honestly didn't think he deserved a happy ending (not that this was entirely happy mind you).

He should have died a miserable fuck getting tortured for all eternity and burning in hell while all the other gods laughed at him and peed on him to momentarily douse the flames before he started getting roasted again.

. . . do you think I should have slipped back into Dark Robio for that one?

Holy crap. So you really hated the character you were playing as. I loved it, I wanted more gods to kill. The story is whatever but Kratos is so badass, I can watch him kill things for hours.

Truth be told I love Kratos. Of every new character created in the last generation of consoles I don't think any of them could hold a candle to him. He was a completely original character.  Not even an anti-hero, this guy WAS the bad guy and just happened to do the right thing because he was being forced to or tricked into doing so.  But there was nothing good about him.

I remember in the first game  in the very beginning when you have a chance to rescue the ship captain from the Hydra and Kratos just takes the key from him, I was surprised.  Anytime he had the chance to do something good, he didn't do it. And I was usually amused by that, but at the same time I never actually like him for it.  So I fully prepared for him to pay for being the god of assholes. And ultimately.... he didn't. In my mind he never really got what was coming to him.

I'm starting to want your ending more. LOL The problem is that I don't see anyone ever hurting Kratos, he is so badass I feel no one can take on him. So it is impossible for anyone to take him down, except himself.

^Which leads to the question, which currently popular gods would be best suited to face Kratos?  I give it to the Judaic god, the one from the old testament.

The new testament Christian god would be all Jedi though, with crazy magic.

Buddha and Mo wouldn't have a chance.

Kratos vs. the Norse gods would be cool. I pity the fool who tangles with Thor.

Kratos would steal his hammer and bash his face into a bloody pulp with it.

Kratos should take on a different pantheon at a time in subsequent games. So in God of War 4 he will fight Ganesh and Shiva, in GoW 5 he'll fight Horus and Ra, and so on.

I profoundly dislike Kratos as a character, though, not because of him being an antihero of sorts, but because of the way he's always portrayed, filled with angst and a constipated look, in tune with the power trip fantasy that the game offers. As far as games go, the GoW series offer a more than satisfactory experience, but the empathy-devoid lead character sure tries his best to outweigh that.
