Can't believe no one's posted a picture of the flipping mascots.  This is the worst pair of mascots in the history of all mascots both past and future.  Stole the gimmick from one of the characters in mosters inc and just made it stupid.  Behold the lameness...

Football started yesterday, and there were more football games today.  Why is football an olympic sport when it has a myriad of other more meaningful showcase events beats me.

They made their first big blander today, showed the flag for South Korea when the North Korean team was to play.  Accidental?

The opening ceremony is tomorrow evening.  Joy of joys

Paul McCartney will be singing at the opening ceremony, so I will watch for that.

I quote

"The opening ceremony is scheduled to begin at 21:00 BST inside the Olympic Stadium. Join BBC One for the build-up from 19:00 BST, right through to the lighting of the cauldron and beyond."

21.00 BST (british summer time) is approximately 19 and a half hours from now

No fecking way it was an accident. The person in charge of assigning the flags knew exactly what he was doing. Good on him.

Been watching the swimming.  Oh my word!  Mens 4x100m freestyle relay final was so intense.  Took me a few moments to catch my breath.  My my my, did that last French guy swim fast or what?

What have you guys been watching?  What have you been impressed by?

Mens Basketball, our team kicking ass.

Some of these "sports" are so weird. The olympcs to me feels like some collection of random crap that no one cares about except for once every 4 years. Ping Pong? Really?

I agree... but it's kind of why they're cool so I think you may be doing it wrong

Why should you care about Olympic basketball when you have the NBA or even college basketball which is of higher quality?  Why should we care about Olympic football when you have the World Cup or Champions League etc all of higher quality.  Olympic tennis when you have four grand slams a year...

To me the olympics is about athletics, swimming and obscure shit no one normally cares about.  Table tennis?  Fuck yeah!  Badminton?  Woohoo!  Archery?  Yippeee!  White water rafting?  Mmmm yes!  Field hockey?  Why of course.  Equestrian events?  Don't mind if I do...

Thinking about it, I take it back.  I too love watching the US team.  And if Argentina fancy themselves and can give a good game ... Let's have it!

and I have to say ... next to Usain Bolt, Kobe was the coolest cat in the whole of the march on Friday night.  The guy just oozes coolness.

You are right. Still its so fake, all of a sudden once every 4 years the whole world cares about these sports. I am very happy for these atheletes, its practically the only reason they do those sports, to get on this stage so that is cool. And that is why the storylines become a big part of it, cause we dont know much about these sports but stories of people are interesting.

Personally I'd watch lots of those obscure sports if they were actually given coverage outside of the Olympics, so I don't think you can really put down all interest due to the novelty factor when it's only a novelty factor because no one will show these things outside of the Olympics.

Anyway, is Olympic coverage like this everywhere? Very rarely will the broadcaster follow a sport to its natural end. They constantly cut away to different sports, show 30 seconds of it, cut to another, so that you can't actually watch any of the events properly unless there is an athlete of your country involved, and even then sometimes they will only show what your country's athlete does as if seeing their part has any meaning to it without seeing the rest of the event.

This has been getting progressively worse since the 2002 Olympics in Australian coverage to the point where it's almost unwatchable. Hrm
