We just finished watching the second season of The Umbrella Academy.  It's entertaining.  It's not particularly good, but it's entertaining.

Aidan Gallager is phenomenal as five though.  I always kind of assumed he was in his early twenties and just looked young, but I looked him up and he's only 17 at the moment, which means he was 15 or 16 when they started shooting the first season, which only makes his performance as this old guy trapped in a young body all the more amazing.  Him alone is reason enough to keep watching.

We've started the last season of the Big Bang Theory as it was recently added to Netflix.  We saw the first 11 seasons end to end a year or so ago.  It's good that we got some time to breath before wacthing the last season, we're tremendously enjoying it again.

Bill and Ted 3 releases next Friday and I've already preordered this from iTunes.  Anybody else watching it?

We saw Meet the Millers yesterday.  It's a comedy about a guy who needs to smuggle drugs over the Mexican border and brings in 3 other people to form a phoney family as to look less suspicious.  We laughed more than we thought we would.  Much, much more.  Turns out the comedic potential of people who try to come over as a family but totally don't act like one most of the time is near endless.

Also, there's a scene in which Jennifer Aniston strips.  And while there's certainly a body double involved, it still makes for more Aniston skin than you'll probably see elsewhere.

I wasn't such a huge fan of the original movies that I really wanted To see a third. When it's free on Netflix or Prime I'll probably watch, but not until then. However, if you like it let us know. I am kind of curious. I've heard a lot of mixed things so far.

I really liked it. A lot of the jokes hit more so than the previous films. It's funny with a lot of heart and a great end to the trilogy.  The robot steals the show.

I watched Cuties and not only was it pretty tame, it was actually quite endearing, and the performances of the girls were great (particularly the protagonist). I take it that no one has ever seen a French film before if this is meant to be shocking?  (Or Kids, or Puberty Blues, or Thirteen--and they're not even French!) Also, my female friends of the same age when I was 10-12 spoke explicitly and constantly about sex (way more than the girls in the film; though the dumb shit they learnt wasn't from porn but women's magazines and shit like that---I guess that means I'm old!) and danced like this, are we meant to pretend this isn't true? I find it equally abhorrent to suggest that there is any shame in this: as uncomfortable as some people might find it, the fact of the matter is that sexuality begins to develop in childhood, and repressing it just because it makes some adults uncomfortable (the parents found the dancing horrifically cringy) isn't healthy for children, in fact it's traumatic.

EDIT: I should also add, that for a French film if it's there's anything shocking about it it's that like a non-French bildungsroman where the rebellious act ultimately "goes to far", and the way to independence is that of classical greek mediocrity: in this case, reject the responsibilities of pologyamy, but also reject the freedom of twerking lol, for a middle of the road, goldilocks solution. (Which is the most unconvincing aspect of the film, as she's only able to do this cause her mum magically decides to support her without much of a justification as to why; and what happens when she has to confront her father?) French coming of age stories often aren't so babyish and are willing to aim for some form of subversive virtue over mediocrity. But, to be fair, it works better as the alienation of a first or second gen migrant, as twerking isn't subversive in French society as it is in her home life, and familial responsibility isn't subversive in her home life as it is in French society, so by rejecting both there is actually some degree of virtue involved, I suppose.

So it turns out it's French after all, and it takes the new multicultural French society to produce a traditional French film which shocks the world after decades of "international" films produced in France for the foreign market lol.

Watched the first season of Dragon’s Dogma on Netflix. It’s much like Castlevania in looks and tone. Kind of dark, good people die, and some gratuitous nudity and sex. It was ok. Interested in seeing where they go with it in season two.

We're watching the mini series 'the queens gambit' about a female chess master in the 60's.  It's much more entertaining than you'd imagine when you think of chess.

And we finished it yesterday.  It was certainly entertaining, but the ending wasn't what I was expecting at all and didn't fit where the series was going in my opinion.

I finished up the second season of Unsolved Mysteries (or the second half of the first season depending on how Netflix categorizes all of it). I thought this new block of mysteries was pretty good, except for the ghost stories in Japan. That was definitely sad, but I don't think it was terribly compelling.

The story about the unidentified woman in the hotel though was amazing. That was utterly fascinating. Even if you don't want to watch the whole series, that particular episode was super interesting.

What happened to Tarantino? I just watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and it's either a mediocre satire, or utter horseshit. Dude's directing sucks beyond the actors without his editor sidechick, and all his films from Inglourious Basterds onwards have been utterly shallow wish-fulfilment fantasies (with the exception of The Hateful Eight which is his masterpiece). What the fuck?

You know what, the dude is a film nerd who goes on about how old pulpy Hollywood flicks and Spaghetti Westerns etc. actually have a lot of complexity and depth to them. This film is a tribute to them, and it's utterly insulting, because unlike the films it's inspired by, it has no depth to it at all. Gross. And what the fuck is up with its depiction of the era and the Family? That's where the satire comes in? Evil, dangerous hippies out to get Hollywood are in fact stopped by the one dimensional moral righteousness and arse-kickery of Hollywood? Mildly amusing as satire. But insulting to the complexity of the shit it's inspired by, and obviously Tarantino is too much of a fawning film nerd to shit on anything in cinema lol.

Weird depiction of Bruce Lee, too.

Polanski floating around in Austin Powers suits was hilarious, though; as was the child actor (who luckily didn't run into Polansk!).

You nailed it right there. Without Sally Menke holding him back and possibly slapping some sense into him, his movies definitely took a dive (sorry, I can't get on board with your opinion of Hateful Eight). They are just pure self-indulgence at this point. That said, if you ever does that Star trek movie they've been talking about, I will still watch that.

I tried watching Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and ultimately just tuned out. For the life of me could not get what he was going for. It almost felt like he was trying to settle a grudge with some Hollywood historian or something.

Maybe it was a Vincent Bugliosi diss. Even sadder, maybe he was trying to settle his grudge with Charles Manson for destroying his innoence.

Inglourious I can enjoy in spite of my problems with its superficial themes because it's still a beautiful piece of cinema. Thanks Sally!
