I'm pondering a Raspberry Pi like some of you. I use my PSP for NES and SNES games, I can hook up my N64 at a moment's notice and my GB collection is kept in two metal boxes on a bookshelf. But the PSP's SNES emulation isn't perfect, esp. for games like Star Fox or DKC 3, and I've heard good things about Pi.
I have zero affinity for Atari, though I do count managing to finally play a real copy of E.T. amongst my geek accomplishments. 
Thanks guys, but Atari is shit. I got the 5200 or whatever and the 7000. So 7000 model is basically an NES, better games but still a messy library. Can someone give me some brief history on the time frame of these consoles. And yes I tried Empire, wtf. But its nice to see that the Hoth level was popular even back then.
Most of my time will be spent on the modern industry with NES forward. I just had to play Turtles in Time, so good. I was looking through the massive Game Boy library and came upon Castlevania Legends, it was really good, just pure classic castlevania.I was shocked to find it came out in 97, wtf after SOTN?! Thats why Alucard was a big part. How long where they making standard GB games, crazy. Oh and I found Vampire Killer on some system I forget, MSX maybe. I was shocked to find its not like Castlevania 1 at all, it has a very different structure. So now I need to play japanese Castlevania games.
I love trying old random licesned stuff. I found a Star Trek DS9 SNES game, its surpiringly interesting. You navigate the ship, talk to the cast and stuff, fun stuff. I am now loading up PS1 games. I will finally play Alundra. I have plenty of PS1 games I missed out on. Parasite Eve2 for instance, Fear Effect as well.
Its fun just picking a random game and seeing what comes up. I played something on SNES called Spectre, it was full polygon FPS, TERRIBLE but crazy tech.

As far as Atari 2600 games, there's very little I can recommend. Pitfall and Pitfall II: The Lost Caverns (don't confuse it with the mess that is Super Pitfall) are pretty much the only games for it I can recommend for actual enjoyment. Superman for the Atari is pretty decent too. Other than that, check out some other games just for curiosity and maybe any accompanying history lessons.
I primarily use my Pi for translated ROMs of Japanese games that never got published in the west, as well as for arcade titles through the mame emulators. Anyway once you reach the 8-bit and 16-bit games I'd love to know what you're playing. I can throw out a few recommendations too if you like.
Im using Motionblue retropie image. I got most stuff up and runing. I got Daphne games but I have no clue how to play them, it just gets stuck at the menu.
The 5200 was from 1982 until 1984.
The 7800 was from 1986 until 1992.

Oh Vader, if you get a chance grab a copy of Goonies for the NES/Famicom. I don't know if you spent time playing Goonies II, and always wondered where it was like I did, but now is your chance to play it. It's not a bad game. Tough as nails, like so many other NES games. Read a quick FAQ on the game, and spend 30 minutes with it. It'll be fun.
Konami and Capcom were GODLY on the SNES. So much gaming greatness to be had there.
I just can't focus with this thing. I finished downloading some Sega CD and PS1 games. I tried Road Rash on segaCD, holy fuck that version is awful, I know what RR looks like on a better console. Kind of interesting to see the presentation of NFS games kind of begin in that time.
I then randomly got stuck on GTA2, the one GTA I never played. After many minutes amazed at how horrible the controls are, I kind of got into the groove. I distinctly remember GTA1 being more fun than this though. Still blows my mind that this franchise went on to become the king.
I switched to TG16 after and tried some neutopia which I never got around to before. Ehhh poor zelda 1 clone, I probably won't finish it. Then I played splatterhouse which I never played before. Uhhh that is one simple short game, like woah. Did the shock value mean that much?
And I ended the night on an old friend I had back in the NES days, skate or die 2 which I started up only cause I wanted to hear the song. Skate or die, skate skate skate or die die die die die die!
Who knows what I play today and if I can actually focus on a game or two.
And Splatterhouse came out a time when parental safety councils and other media censorship groups were at their peak. So making a game like that immediately got them free PR. Honestly, if those kinds of groups did not try to single that game out like there never would have been a sequel since it really was not that good. No one ever would have touched it otherwise.
Ohh I also tried out fighting force 2, cause I enjoyed FF1. What in the hell happened?! What was that thing I was playing. I turned that off quick.
Ok played some weird stuff. I found this game called Yo, Bro, or something. It's a skateboarding game but you are poochie looking thing and you skate around the town fighting giant plant monsters while listening to Beach Boys music. It seems surreal, first how did they get The Beach Boys to agree to this, and wtf.
I tried another TG16 game called China warrior, it had huge sprites like altered beast but oh my god its so bad. Then I played Bloody Wolf, the plot is "the president hasn't been kidnapped, save him from the enemy." The first boss was named "shotgun man". The creative team behind that one needs a raise. The game is ok.
I was shocked to find out there were three NES robocop games, I only played the first. I was more shocked to find how bad the next two were. I tried faxanadu, nope, no thank you. I'll play zelda 2 if I want a good game like that.
And finally I played for the first time Star Tropics!!!!! Uhhh I don't get it. So it's an entire game of zelda like battle rooms?

I remember Faxanadu, don't remember if I actually liked it or not. 
Beat me to it. That list spans a lot of different consoles, PC, and arcade. Still I'm sure you can find a few turds on that list to play.
There is a reason I have gone silent here, I'm playing one game. The masterpiece that is Chrono Trigger. I'll review it later, I just want to say it's an adventure that matches some of the all time great adventures in gaming. It lives up to the hype.

My wife and I argue about ET all the time. Or at least far more often than any married couple would over an Atari game that is 35 years old. She liked it, I did not.
That said I do have it on the Raspberry Pi. More of an oddity to show off the occasional house guests who may never have seen it before.
