God 2012 was such a shit year for gaming. Fucking Journey....

It really wasn't that bad. But whoever voted for those lame titles definitely IS that bad.

These came out in 2012:

  • Xcom Enemy Unknown
  • Borderlands 2
  • Dishonored
  • Diablo 3
  • Far Cry 3
  • Black Mesa
  • Halo 4
  • Spec Ops The Line
  • Mark of the Ninja
  • Mass Effect 3

Thanks for that, I've put them in the pool.

In terms of influence, that's a whole different beast. I really don't think ANYTHING of the past decade has been very influential. Literally everything has been built off of games from the previous decade. I can't think of anything that came out & changed the game, like say Halo & GTA3 in 2001. It's been 00's era gameplay with microtransactions & loot boxes added in.

Yeah, looking at those games on the list I agree. Whatever pushed games as a service (or the forever game) came out this decade though and that should be on the list, as right or wrong (and it's wrong) that game was influencial. Minecraft?

This kind of lists tend to fluctuate for me on any given day but here is a list of ten favourite games of mine during the past ten years. In no particular order:

order:

- Resident Evil 2 Remake

- Devil May Cry 5

- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

- Super Mario Odyssey

- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

- Monster Hunter World: Iceborne

- Bayonetta 2

- Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition

- Xenoblade Chronicle

Thanks Arch, I'll put that in the pool as well.

I think if it is not a personal Top 10, then you have to go by most influential (ten games that had the most impact), not necessarily popular, but impact (so PUBG would be on the list, but Fortnite would not, as PUBG was the game that made Fortnite).

I can't really agree with your assessment on PUBG and Fortnite.  Is it the first game, or the game that became the largest succes that is the most influential?  I don't see people walking around with T-shirts from PUBG, or action figurines from PUBG being sold in toy stores.

It seems like the games or strategies of this decade that have been influential, have been so in all the wrong ways & definitely not in the ways that things were influential in gaming in the past.

Loot boxes were started by EA & Andrew Wilson, aka "The Wilson Lootbox". So EA would have to be one of the most influential gaming corps of the past 10 years. And Wilson one of the most influential suits, with his "dead inside" eyeballs. Though, I think loot boxes and definitely microtransactions were started in the late 00's (Remember Bethesda & the horse armor for like $5 in Oblivion in 2006). They just didn't get out of hand until THIS decade.

I think DLC is definitely a product of the 00's, but lootboxes and RNG prizes are definitely a product of this gen. What game debuted the Wilson lootbox?

EDIT: Wikipedia says Overwatch started the strategy of lootbox affecting important mechanics. I can believe it. Blizzard gets away with so much.

I'd make my list based on what is best, but I can't really remember what games I played this year and liked, so there's not much hope of me doing that for a decade. Nyaa

So here's the most influential, innovative or otherwise important:

1 Minecraft

2 Pokemon Go

3 DOTA2 (then again, LoL was the prior decade, but it was more niche)

4 Fortnite/Overwatch (The former for its cultural influence, the latter for its lootboxes)

5 Dear Esther/Journey (The former is the ultimate achievement in walking simulation, and one of the first two; the latter is the epitome of the chillaxing indie game)

Honourable Mentions:

PUB

Metro 2033/Last of Us

MGS5

Dark Souls

Shovel Knight.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

I think it was Fifa.

Looks like it, cheers. Also, apparently Ultimate Team started in 2009 which is definitely important (and still going well today), but pretty much everything seems to mention Overwatch when it comes to modern implementation.

Interestingly, Counter Strike also had loot boxes apparently!

Somebody spent 15 grand on lootboxes in Mass Effect 3. That makes me want to vomit.

I still want to blame Overwatch. Nyaa

So FIFA 09 is the first Ultimate Team that was pay to win? The one problem I have with that video is the suggestion that EA has an IP issue. So long as they havethe FIFA rights, they'll be fine if they lose lootboxes. Really interesting, though.

For the record, I'd also place Fortnight over PUBG on a game of the decade list. PUBG created the current version of the Battle Royal shooter, though it certainly existed earlier. But if you look at mass and critical appeal Fortnight surpasses it (those damn maps on PUBG are just too big).

I think you have to weigh popularity, innovation, and quality all together when you do a list That's not based on strictly personal preference.

Fortnite wins regardless, as PlayerUknown's Battlegrounds should be shortened to PB, not fucking PUBG. And if one were to take into account the stylisation of PlayerUnkown, then it should be PUB, still not PUBG. FFS.

Fortnite has that vanilla, unoffensive family friendly look to it. Like a generic saturday morning cartoon.

It does. And PB looks like a generic b-grade budget shooter or a mod, and Overwatch looks like the most over-produced anime/cartoon crossover ever. Apparently lots of people love Overwatch's aesthetic, though. Sad

The final list has been assembled. Just have to get final approval from the eidtorial board.  Many of you will be surprised by the final ordering and inclusions.

Overwatch lootboxes do not impact mechanics at all. Mass Effect 3's multiplayer started what are now present day lootboxes/loot packs.

Ahem, the reply option is gone from threads?
