The PS3 blogs update today is about the PS3s new commercial and marketing campaign, to highlight the video download service.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/12/15/ps3-not-just-for-games-anymore/

You can see the commercial in the link above, the commercial will air on MNF tonight. Seriously... this is what the geniuses at Sony came up wth. Its Dec., sales are terrible and you put out a commercial focusing on video downloads, what?! Is it a nice feature, I guess, I dont use it, I guess someone does but is that really what you want to show or focus on. Hey how about the games you have out now like Little Big Planet which never gets commercials!

They deserve low sales, they have no clue what they are doing.

Xbox 360 has had movie downloads for a long time now, but I've never used that feature. It's a nice option for the PS3 to have, but I find it funny that Sony now want's people to download movies when they've been trying to get everyone to support their Blu-Ray format.

You must have missed those, which also just came out?

There's plenty of adverstising for Little Big Planet here in Canada.  I hardly watch TV and I've seen them multiple times.

What's worse is that the commerical implies that Playstation 3 doesn't play games anymore.

There is practically no LBP commercials here, the first time I saw one was yesterday on the VGA, all of gaf was shocked that LBP commercials actually exist. Its been out for nearly two months, their handling of LBP marketing is terrible.

Hmm, come to think of it, I've never seen any LBP commercials, and I watch TV quite often.

What the fuck is this shit?

On second thought, that sounds about right. They need to attract a broader audience, since catering to gamers only has led to lackluster sales so far. This is not an ad catered to gamers. This is an ad seeking for broader horizons. In the view of someone looking for a videogame system, both the Wii and the 360 already beat the PS3 to a pulp for different reasons. They need to focus on features that the other systems lack (Wii) or have gimped (360, with the Sony movie deal that severely restricts MS's video offerings), in order to push some sales.

So you're saying you haven't seen this, and this, and these? I watch maybe two ours of television a week, and at least one of them comes on every time. While watching UFC Unleashed last Friday, the Murals one was on during every break. I'm sick of them at this point.

Yeah I've seen commercials for LBP plenty of times. Also watching Raw tonight I've seen Resistance 2 at least 4 times in the 2-hour show and when commercials come on I'll flip around to different channels so they may have shown it more times or have shown LBP as well. I live in Canada btw.

The PS3 is  also a “movie downloading machine” hmmmmmmmmm. I suppose it's a good idea to promote a great feature, but it does seem like they are advertising a PVR and not a games console. Can I ask what kind of crazy internet speeds you guys have to download hi-def ful length movies? It takes me an hour and half to get a 150mb file.

And don’t forget, you only have until December 31, 2008 to save $150 on the purchase of a PLAYSTATION 3 by signing up for a PlayStation credit card!

Cool, I would get one and never use it. Happy

I've seen the same LBP ad repeated on UKTV but strangely with an Aussie voiceover and an exploding dog.

I saw some commercials on TV, but they never explained the concept of the game clearly. They said so you want to be a rockstar? And proceded to show a rock level. It was not clear from the commercial that you can make and share your own level.

In comparison with the Wii ISS commercial. Here Nintendo explained clearly the revolutionary control of the game. They educate people what the game is about, that's were Sony failed! The game looks like an ordinary 2D platformer.

But too be honest the 3rd place PS2 commercials were retarded too, but no one was complaing because PS2 was selling through the roof!

Dont know how this turned into a selling concepts thread. But it's notoriously hard to sell concepts like physics gameplay or UCC in an advert. Part of the reason these epic looking games sell is because they look like movies, they look straightforward in adverts. People know through years of play that they will be in for a similar experience. How do you sell Katamari?

Since no one replied I will stuff this here about LBP.

Note: I'm not saying that the game is selling "badly" just that it hasn't so far blown up into this wildly successful game that gamers and the media were expecting. (sucessful in sales terms)

I knew it wouldn't be a massive initial hit the way Sony wanted it to be. Forumers thought that people would be wowed, it would be a massive triple AAA success. As a game, yes it is, but there is more to working out a games sales than just quality. In a perfect world, the quality would win out but that's just not how it works.

LBP had the odds stacked against it, yes it's on a console with a smaller userbase comparitive to other platforms, but the console also happens to still be an expensive purchase and the world economy is in turmoil too so it's not a system selling property. What will sell the system is a cheaper price. The game is a 2-D platformer and those only seem to sell well on handhelds these days, despite the gorgeous visuals, it's still belongs to an old, almost niche genre the same as Muramasa does.

Yes it has dazzling UCC but joe public wont care and maybe wont even understand how its all made.

User content creation is fantastic, but truth be told, people are lazy about these things and the presentation is at odds with the relatively complex (for the general public to digest) concept of connecting online and creating your own stuff. It doesn't even matter that you can just download other peoples levels and play, even connecting a console to the internet is too much for a lot of the general consumers out there. So who does LBP appeal to with its presentation? How do games like Banjo and Viva Pinata sit at odds with deep, complex gameplay and presentation that seems to indicate that anybody can play it? It's an uphill struggle all the way.

Sony Europe recently tried to put a brave spin and a brave face on the games UK sales, but it's unlikely that it's going to get anywhere near the 9 million predicted sales, to be the massive system seller than Sony initially envisioned.

It's a new IP.

And to top all that off, they release it in the most stuffed part of the gaming year: winter!

Get the credit card first, then buy a PS3 using it. Then die broke and lonely. PS3 is still $500 here.

Well Nintendo was very successful in selling their concepts. Things like Wii, DS, Brain Training, Wii sports, Wii Fit, etc.

Maybe LBP is meant to be a niche game, but at least Sony could try to explain the concept. Like you finished the game, make your won level and play on! Or go to the internet to play your friends level.

P.S. this thread has 13 replies in the RoF and 18 replies here. See Vader RoF is clearly anti-PS3! Nyaa

An hour and a half to download a 150MB file? Damn dude that's painful. I just downloaded a 60MB file off of Live and it took me less then 1 minute.
