Is it just me? I can't stand the look of games like Final Fantas III and Dragon Quest Monster Jokers.

I plaed pretty far into both games, but after a while, I just got sick of looking at what, to me, was the marriage of an N64 to a PS1. Chunky, jaggy, soupy garbage.

It's got me more than a little woried about DQ9.

I personally love it!

I think it's impressive what the developers can do on the DS with all its limitations. Thinking like that, I think the graphics are pretty darn awesome.

Every time I play the DS, I always wonder how the N64 would've done if it had these modern DS games on it. To me, the DS shows the true potential of what could've been with the N64. I think Miyamoto said that the DS's success was very redemptive because of their past failures.

I can look over the shortcomings because it's a handheld.

Honestly the only 3D game I've played on the DS is Super Mario 64, which was fine (I have Final Fantasy III, but haven't played it).

SM64 was different to me, cause it was a port.

Dont get me wrong, I love the DS and I appreciate the tech, but I would of much preferred a 2d port of FF3 (for example).  I just find that there is a lot of unnecesary time spent walking around etc... with making these games 3d.

It might also be that, as with the N4 and PS1, hte DS really is not equipt to handle 3d properly. I would of much preferred if the PS1 and N64 had applied their tech to 2d rather than the proto-3d stuff.

I know you love the DS and handhelds as much as I do.

And yeah, the DS can handle pretty awesome 2D stuff.

But I think 2D and 3D used together works the best with the DS. It can go both ways. Like Suikoden Tierkries, it has the most amazing 2D backdrops with the characters in 3D. It has a nice effect to it. Also, games like FFXII Revenant Wings and Dragon Quest IV and V, uses 3D for the backgrounds but 2D sprites for the characters.

I think a good blend of both works great with the DS.

I also heard that 2D costs more to do.

I think the N64 was more than capable of handling 3-d and if you check out the VC renditions of those games which fixes the blur they can look great.

The few 3D DS games I have played looked great. Square Enix titles particularly like Revenant wings and the FFCC games.

Blood of Bahamut looks particularly good now.

i haven't played those two games in question but 3D games on the DS i played like mario 64, metroid hunters, animal crossing etc looked very good i thought.  but then again i'm one of the least fussy gamers there are when it comes to graphics, anything SNES quality and above looks great to me

I didn't think DQM: Joker looked that bad. The anime style and trying to make it look cell shaded worked for me.  But on the whole I'm not a huge fan of 3-D polygon games on the DS.  I though FF III looked terrible and that was one of the reasons I quit playing it very early on.

DQ9 looks much better than Joker did. In fact, I'm pretty impressed with the videos and shots I've seen of it. I'm not sure what Level 5 did, but they managed to squeeze more out of the DS than any dev I've seen so far.

Then again that could just be the hobo gourmet standards talking...

Polygonal DS games look fine to me. My only complaint was trying to play SM64DS with a d-pad. *shivers*

Race Driver: Create & Race is one of the best looking 3D games that I've played on DS:

Grid looks even better, though, but I never got to play that one:

Yeah the 3D games on the DS really don't impress me at all. I much prefer they stick to 2D. I find that it's really hard to go back and play most early 3D games ie. the PS1/N64 era games as they can be quite painful to the eyes. Time has most certainly not been kind to them.

Dirt 2 got a good score on IGN. That one doesn't look bad either:

And this is looking pretty awesome too!

I guess it's all about perspective. I can understand why some would say these games look like crap, but to me, it's pretty darn impressive.

Okay, Okay, so the topic should have been "SQUARE-ENIX' 3d engine for the the DS Sucks".

I think it's the cutesy style that's turning you off.

But as you can see from Blood of Bahamut and Revenant wings etc. It really doesn't.

Also, FFIV's characters had more realistic proportions.

I personally like the 3D graphics from Square-Enix games. And technically, it's not SE's engine but Matrix Softwares. Their engine is pretty impressive on the DS. Avalon Code and Nostalgia looks good!
