#18. EverQuest

EverQuest was about as big of a deal as it gets for me. In my world there was gaming before EQ and gaming after EQ. It opened up a new world to me. It was like experiencing a new dimenion. I can tell you the exact moment where it all clicked for me, and I realized that I was playing something special. I was playing as a dark elf and sneaking through the sewers of a human city, as being spotted would result in being killed on site. As I walked in the shadows above me a human "married" couple was having their own conversation. And it hit me that I'm in this world doing my own thing, and they're in the same world doing their thing. It was simultaneouly a shared and separate experience, and it was monumental to me. To top it off though, it was the care that went into building the world that you got to experience. Everything was beautiful, even the slimy sewers and swamps. Entire histories were written for different countries and accessible in libraries. And on some occasions giant events would happen that would change the world as you knew it. Monumental, and a complete game changer.

#17. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Take the classic point and click adventure gameplay, add a legal system that doesn't exist anywhere on earth, throw in some of the funniest writing ever found in a video game, force the player to really think and use some (at times ridiculous) logic, and what do you get? You get Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. It's very hard to pick just one from the original series, as the trilogy is masterfully woven together in a way that I don't think has ever been done in a game before. Still the original gets a special nod since it introduces nearly all of the series' characters and can stand on its own better than the other two. The game can be impossible to put down at times, and on one occasion I was so enveloped in it that I tried to play it on my drive home in rush-hour traffic (don't worry I didn't get into a wreck, though I can damned close). For anyone who enjoys critical and analytical thinking this game is an absolute must.

#16. Rune Factory: Frontier

Rune Factory: Frontier is one of those games that does everything. Farming, fighting, monster ranching, dating, social sim, crafting... it's a pretty full experience.  And all of them are done well. That's the reason why this game is so good. It offers so many different experiences and none of them feel like an after thought. It's just all good. Real good. And it's wrapped up in an amazing art style that lends itself perfectly to the game's setting. The small village in a magical forrest with little spirits flying around, all with a giant stone whale floating over it. Everything about the game just makes you feel cozy. It's a strange way to describe a game, but cozy and comforting... that's the best way to describe this.

Never played Everquest, but wanted to say that you wrote a great description of what it's like to play a good MMORPG.

I have a lot of reading ahead of me.

Making a Best list though? Playing with fire dude.  I did it once, went back and looked at it abuot a month later and has a complete, "WTF were you thinking, dude?!" moment.  It was like an out-of-body experience (one imagines).

I never played that game, I kind of wanted to.

If you liked Crackdown/ Infamous you would dig it.  It is that kind of game but with Nazi's, better traversal, more diverse missions and boobs.

#19. Harvest Moon: Magical Melody

Come on... you knew there would be a Harvest Moon game somewhere on here.  Really to me, the only question was which one would it be. When I really thought about it though, Magical Melody was the game (though HM64 makes a strong case for itself as well). Magical Melody takes the standard HM gameplay that was used in all of the classic games, and adds characters, jobs, and animals from all of the previous games before it. Combine that with new levels of customization to your character and home, and an accomplishment list to keep you going with small goals that you're never too far away from attaining, and you've got something that feels familiar and new at the same time. Simply put this is Harvest Moon's greatest hits.

Of course you pick one of the ones I don't have!

I've actually been toying with this list for about 6 months. It's definitely undergone some changes, but the top 10 has been relatively stable, and most of the games from 11 to 28 have always been strongly considered. I was well aware that 90% of the games I thought were good would be given strange looks by others, assuming they had even been played. Still I'm very happy with my final list, and at the end of the day I think it does justice to the games I've liked over the years and still enjoy to this day.

#15. Street Fighter Alpha 2

When I began this list there was no question that a Street Fighter game would be recognized. It was only a matter of which one (or only one). Street Fighter II, the game that introduced me to the genre and revitalized an entire industry? Super Street Fighter II, the perfected version of the original series and my serious introduction to what gamer hype was? SF3 Third Strike, the greatest competitive fighter ever? SF4, the game that got  me into the world of HD gaming?  No, it was Alpha II, the dark horse or the dark horse installment. It's a game that gets overlooked, and only gets recognized by the diehard fans of the series who managed to track it down. It was near perfectly balanced, with dozens of distinctive fighters, and completely unique experiences for each of them. It had a polish that the next installment of the series missed, and I'd argue that none other than 3rd Strike have had since.  And it's a close to perfect as any fighter as ever come.

#14. The World Ends With You

The World Ends With You, is one of those rare games that pretty much throws every single gaming convention right out the window, and still manages to be excellent. It takes so many chances with how it implements the touch screen, the battle system, leveling up, even the art style. Nothing here is traditional, and yet it all works perfectly. It's a tribute to thinking outside of the box, and a reminder what truly creative developers can do.

#13. Pokemon Snap

The very best on-rails shooter ever made doesn't have use a gun, there is no violence (on the part of the player anyway), and it's cuter than all hell. It is Pokemon Snap. It's the ultimate safari game, probably because it recognized taking pictures of Pokemon is inifinitely more fun than antelope. Shooting pictures, and figuring out what you'd need to do to trigger them into a more interesting post wasn't exactly a difficult task, but that's part of the reason the game was so much fun. It was a relaxed game, where you were never in danger so you could simply take your time, enjoy the sites, and get that perfect picture. We're in dire need of more games like this today, and moreso we need a sequel to this.

Oh man how I loved the Street Fighter Alpha games. Love the art style and the animation. I have the Alpha Anthology for PS2 and it's a fantastic collection of the arcade originals. Now you've made me want to pull out my PS2 and play a few rounds. Oh how I wish the PS3 was b/c. Sad

Not even, but a great game nevertheless, and often overlooked. Good to see it on the list.

Your guess is wrong, and your selection for best-on rails shooter is probably wrong too. Nyaa

The great thing about opinions is even though the rest of you are clearly and embarassingly wrong, you're still free to have them and think as you like.

So Foolz what you're talking about? A Time Crisis game?
