It was just announced earlier today that Square Enix and the original developers of two of the most unsung, classic SNES RPGs ever: Lufia and Lufia II, are making a new entry in the series for an as yet unannounced system. It is assumed to be the DS, the current home for all popular Japanese RPG series this generation --BUT-- it is also being assumed that the revival of the series would be first sparked by the digital re-release of the first two games! This is AWESOME news for (most likely) Wii Virtual Console owners! Dramatic story-lines and dozens upon dozens of hours of SNES-style game play await us all, if that be the case!

Trust me when I say so folks, these were two of the best games back in the day that didn't contain the words: Dragon, Fantasy, Final or Warrior!

I liked the original Lufia well enough. Solid RPG, though a little bit generic.  It had a nice twist in the storyline that really helped make it worth it. But Lufia II was awesome.  Very overlooked game of its time, and I can honestly say I'd put it as one of the top 5 jRPGs to show up on the SNES.  I'd grab it in a heartbeat if it showed on the VC.

So I too am looking forward to this new Lufia game. So long as it's more like the SNES games and not the last one that show up on the GBA then it'll certainly be worth looking into.

I have the Lufia 2 but only tried the GBA one (and didn't like it much). Leo, you think Sinistral  would hold up for modern play?

Fine, ask Leo but not me, but screw you I'm giving you my opinion anyway.  I think it would be okay, but it would likely lose some appeal if you haven't play the first. Lufia 2 was a prequel to the first one. So a lot of the characters that you encountered and heard stories about in the first one were now playable in this game.  If it shows on the VC though I'd pick it up. It's a solid RPG, good characters, good story.  I wouldn't throw down for an original copy though.

^Sorry good sir, that was in deference to the original poster.  I have a SNES version of Sinistral, so since I have it, it's worth a go I'd say (I'm not big on story, so the fact that it is a prequel would not hurt me much).

It's an RPG. At least, that's what I gather from the pics.

Fucking Square-Enix. . . they're putting Lufia 2 on the DS.  And it's a remake no less.  Apparently another one of these corporate meetings was had:

Corporate Pitch Man:  Hey do you remember that game series Lufia?  The one we got when we acquried Taito?

Head Honcho:  Barely. What of it?

CPM:  Well, even though the last few installments have been pretty underwhelming and there hasn't even been on released in over 5 years, I think it's time we put out another one.  People are dying to play this series again!!

HH:  What is the game again? I'm not entirely sure I remember it at all.

CPM:  That's not important.  There were like 4 games in the series.  It's time for another!

HH:  Are we going to put it on the Virtual Console?

CPM:  No, no, no. We won't make as much money that way.

HH:  You want to make a new installment then?

CPM:  Of course not. We're Square-Enix.  Why make a new game when you can just remake an old one?

HH:  A fine point.  Go on.

CPM:  So a lot of people liked the second one in the series. So I think we should remake that and put it on the DS.

HH:  The second one in the series?

CPM:  It was a prequel. Most people never played the game anyway so they won't know the difference so long as we call it something else.

HH:  So let me get this straight. . . we're going to remake an old SNES game of a series that hasn't had much of a following for a while, change the title and possibly eliminate name recognition for those who do remember it, and release it onto a platform that's already flooded with RPGs?

CPM:  And it would probably be in our best interest to release it in a typically slow sales period like February.

HH:  Yeah, that sounds good. Plus let's not do any marketing for it. And then we'll decide our future plans based on how well this game sells.  Get it done!

Don't forget to blame the economy when it doesn't sell!

That's not really Square-Enix's M.O.  When Chrono Trigger DS didn't meet expectations they placed blame squarely on the the shoulders of the consumers.

It's things like this that make me love the DS so much.
