We always go Game of the Year but we never do Movie of the Year awards. I think you can tell a lot about a persons movie preference by a list like this. Tell us your favorite movie from years past, go by the year the movie came out not when you saw it.

As you will see I am a sci-fi action nut.

2010 - Odds are Inception, it enters my upper ranks of favorite movies of all time.
2009 - District 9, it was like a classic 80's sci-fi action movie done today.
2008 - The Dark Knight, best superhero movie of all time by a mile.
2007 - WTF happened this year... looking at the list of movies... uhh... 300 maybe? Bourne Ultimatium I guess would be my favorite of the year. It's a fantastic action movie.
2006 - The Departed,  one hell of a crime drama, I was entertained from start to finish.
2005 - Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, the best of the prequels, an excellent SW movie.
2004 - Tough one, it's between Spider-Man 2 and The Incredibles, The Incredibles is what I choose. I thought that was a more pure comic book movie than SM2, sorry I am not in love with that movie like so many are.
2003 - LOTR: Return of the King, best movie ever, I cried like a girl. A shout out to Finding Nemo.
2002 - LOTR: The Two Towers, masterpiece.
2001 - LOTR: Fellowship, masterpiece, started my love with these movies. Second only to SW in franchises I love.
2000 - Gladiator, such a bad-ass movie.
1999 - The Matrix, to this day one of the most incredible first watch movie experiences I have ever had in a theater.
1998 - Saving Private Ryan, best war movie ever, maybe the best opening scene to a movie.
1997 - Titanic, laugh all you want this was epic movie making at it's finest.
1996 - Independence Day, I love this movie and all it's cheesy goodness.
1995 - Braveheart, they can take our lives but they can never take OUR FREEDOM!!
1994 - The Lion King, the greatest Disney movie of all time.
1993 - Jurassic Park, do I need to say anything, all time classic.
1992 - I didn't see many of the movies this year, it's a tie between Aladdin and Wayne's World.
1991 - Terminator 2, one of the best action movies ever.
1990 - Hmm, this being favorites I won't choose Goodfellas cause while it is the best movie from this year it's not something I would watch a bunch of times. It's either Home Alone or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and I like Home Alone more, so that wins.
1989 - Tough one, many movies I love but I will say Back to the Future Part 2, my favorite of the trilogy cause of the future scene.
1988 - Die Hard, maybe the best action movie of all time
1987 - Wow great movies, I say Robocop is my favorite of the bunch. A special mention to Evil Dead 2 which is my favorite horror movie.
1986 - Aliens, a classic that practically set all the rules for the space marine.
1985 - Back to the Future, one of those movies I can watch a million times and never get bored of.
1984 - Ghostbusters, my first movie/cartoon obsession, the funny thing is many years later I realized I didn't get half the jokes in the movie cause I was too young.
1983 - Return of the Jedi, my favorite movie I get chills every time Luke says his "I am a Jedi speech"
1982 - Uhhhh... I have no love for ET. Blade Runner I need to watch again, I don't remember much of it. I guess Star Trek 2 wins by default.
1981 - Raiders of the Lost Ark, a masterpiece in every which way.
1980- The Empire Strikes Back, the best SW movie in terms of quality one of my favorite movies ever.
1979 - Yikes... I guess most people would pick Apocalypse Now, that movie was kind of boring to me. Alien is my favorite of this year.
1978 - Superman, at this point its hard to find movies, though this year had two of the best horror movies ever Halloween and Dawn of the Dead. But Superman is a movie I have seen and enjoyed far more times than those.
1977 - Star Wars, duh.
1976 - Rocky, Adrian!!!
1975 - Jaws, some people say this is horror, no way, its an adventure film and one of the best ever.

I will stop there cause I am reaching areas where I have not seen much of the movies.

Going through a couple years more thoroughly, you can swap Rush Hour in 1998 for either The Mask of Zorro or The Truman Show, and Shanghai Noon is 2000 can instead go to Space Cowboys.

I have not seen any of those except for those highlighted.  But there are some HORRIBLE movies in that list.

EDIT: I was going to do a list, but the films by year I found only have oscar winners/ block busters.

How the hell am I supposed to remember by year?

I'll just say that the 4 and a half hour Red Cliff is the best film I've seen recently.

I only like Aspro's list ... somewhat.  The others are packed with holywood mainstream whore movies Grinning

Watch this space while I try compile a list of appropriately elitist mostly arthouse and foreign movies.

... look forward to seeing a list from Foolz.  He got good taste.

Except for going to see Surf's Up I have not been in a picture theatre since 2000 when I saw Memento.  When looking through the lists of movies for each year, I saw almost every film in 1995, 1996, 1997 (I seriously would see 3-4 films a weekend, and then one thruogh the week) and then after that I kind of tail off.  It was in 1998 that I started getting into gaming as much as I am today.

My current issues with enjoying films are:

+ The germs.  I was watching Being John Malkovich (sp?) one day and became completely obsessed with how filthy the theatre was.

+ Having to sit still and not have anything to do (games have ruined me).

+ I've seen so many films that they don't seem novel or interesting any more.

Lebowski.  It's probably my favorite film ever.  But then I see Rocky and say the same thing and on and on...

Memento is quite well done.  These days you'd say it's like a video game -- like Indigo Prophecy -- but back then games did not come close to movies in terms presentation.  Well worth seeing.  Same with Ghost Dog, that would be a great movie.

Damnit -- where are all the GOOD movie-license games?

1999 - Toy Story 2
1998 - Rush Hour The Mask of Zorro
1997 - Princess Mononoke
1996 - Hamlet
1995 - Toy Story
1994 - Shawshank Redemption
1993 - The Fugitive
1992 - Porco Rosso
1991 - Terminator 2: Judgment Day

1997 and 1994 were packed, 1996 and 2000 were destitute.

I'll talk about the ones I saw.  I saw Borat on the plane once.  I thought it was hilarious, until I realized that he was taking advantage of people, and then  the strings started to show, in terms of how people where really kind, but being polite in front of the camera to this strange foreigner, and it became un-funny.  He was taking advantage of normal people.  Ali-G is funny because he is taking down big people.

Hamlet is really good, I have the DVD.  Shawshank and the Fugitive are some of my favorite movies, at least they were for a time.  Fugitive still is, it would be interesting to combine that film with a super hero movie, so like a third of the way in Harrison Ford develops super hero strength and takes out justice on the entire state (ala First Blood).

Shawshank is ultimately too syrupy though.  Maybe I've just been overexposed to it, as I quite liked it the first time around.  For whatever reason, maybe because of the Susan Saranden (sp?) connection, I find a lot of commonalities with Dead Man Walking, which is also syrupy and heavy handed, but a better story about justice and prisons.  Pulp Fiction got my vote that year because it's both unique and a fine amalgam of good elements of film making.
