Here are the details: (as described by Ars Technica)

"PlayStation Plus will run you $50 for a year or $18 for three months, and you'll get access to free games and content, not to mention priority for demos and betas, for the length of your subscription. Let your subscription lapse and you lose that content.

It's not a bad deal, but one of the major strengths of the PlayStation platform was the free online support, and now that it's tiered, the free option is going to stop looking quite so appealing." END QUOTE

Nothing there for me. I honestly don't care for those additions.

Plus does look good, particularly being able to play current gen games for free like LBP, and the price is right in line with XBL so that's fine too.  The only real issue I see now is the free online support will start to suffer.  It's not going to evolve anymore or if it does, it will only be marginal.  But that's typically what happens with free services anyway, so honestly I don't think anyone could say it was unexpected.

^I think that the likelihood is no diminishment of free service with the PS3 and elimination of free service with the next generation.

I don't pay for XBL, and I wouldn't pay for PSN either.

XBL Free is not comparable to PSN (non-plus).  You really can't do anything with XBL free other than buy games.

Granted, I don't pay for XBL and I won't for PSN either, but that has more to do with my capped bandwidth.  I'd probably get Plus for the "free" games.

I also download quite a few free demos and videos from XBL each month, which is all I really care to do online with my consoles.

I still can't wrap my head around the notion of offering DEMOS and BETAS (or early acces to them) as some sort of perk in a paid online service. Fuck.

I'm no better. I own a Gold Live account. But fucked if I'm happy with the way things went down this generation. The idea of going PC-only the upcoming generation is increasingly appealing.

You're just saying that because you are stuffed full of Steam deals.

It's something to consider though -- I wish I knew how much the 360 controller is supported on the PC.  I've asked before in the PC forum and got no where.

You would think competition would make all companies try to offer more such features for free, in order to make people buy their consoles, their games, and the multiplatform games on their consoles, to profit from all of that, rather than keep trying to find ways to nickel and dime people for such things... Both Microsoft and Sony make much more money than Valve, yet Valve keep adding to their features in order to make people buy more from them, and keep their own games popular as well, rather than try to sell those features by themselves...

As long as I can play online for free, I don't need to pay for online.
