Everyone knows about what Blizzard is trying with Read ID right? Basically asking/ making their users use thier real names in forums and in-game chat, toward the goal of making people play nice.

The concerns for women are obvious.  And then there are people who just don't want their real-life world to collide with their online world.

My take?  I dig everything about Bitmob.com -- but I don't participate there because they require real names.  Am I ashamed of anything? No.  I just didn't want my co-workers, bosses, subordinates, ex-girlfriends, friends from grade school or HR department knowing all the intricacies of my interest in gaming and how much time I spend yakking about them.

What do you guys make of it?

It's a pretty risky move by Blizzard, and I'm as puzzled as the next dude as to the motives behind their reasoning. If they were looking for better behaved forumers and cleaner boards, stricter moderation policies and a closer monitoring of the boards would do wonders first.

It's no secret the WoW boards are a haven for misanthropy and the worst traits of internet behavior, but that only happens because there is no consequence to that. Going straight to this draconian approach will eventually hurt more the very same people they are allegedly trying to help.

The only thing I can think of is that for most people who work in gaming their social circle and their vocational circle are one and the same (which is not the case for most people). So they probably thought it would not be a big deal.

If they did what you said (moderated more diligently) than I can see them coming under the same kind of criticism from their community -- it just would have stayed in the community and not boiled over into the rest of the web.

I agree though that that would have been the best first step.  I can imagine this edict coming from someone who has a lot of power in their organization, it seems like a very utopian, not-thought-out-too-well kind of idea from someone too powerful to question.

That they'd be treated far better than they would have been if they had not made it clear they were women?

^Don't be stupid, there are no such things like real women on the interwebs. It's all guys pretending to be chicks, just to get attention.

Well, they killed it.

"A Blizzard employee going by the handle Bashiok revealed his real name, Micah Whipple, on the forums in the course of the debate. WoW Riot responded by quickly finding and publishing Whipple's address, phone number, age, the names of his family, his Facebook page and lists of his favourite music and movies, to illustrate the privacy and identity theft issues raised by Blizzard's decision."

Yes, harassed with free stuff and party invites and friendly people rather than aresholes. That's how it goes on MMOs and it isn't any different on WoW, though it might be very different on the forum. I never set foot in that cesspool.

I think it's stupid, but then I became a facebook member which has my real name. I really hate it. I think I should delete my account but my cousins and aunts/uncles want my pics.

That sounded much weirder than it should have.

You can set facebook to be 100% private though (teach your family how to do that as well, it's in the privacy settings), so that you don't even show up in the search for people who haven't already been added as friends, and so even if someone links to your profile, to that person it will just be a 404 error if it's not your friend already. The point is people want their gaming detached from their real ID (especially given the roleplay lengths some go to in such titles), not that you never should use your real ID online. If you aren't among douches on facebook (just add your real life friends and family, nobody else) it doesn't matter it's your real name, there's no reason for anyone to hurt you, it's just the same as your real name being on the phone book, nobody's gonna pick a random name on the phonebook and then stalk the person out of the blue or something, but if it's someone "known" from a game, there are rivalries and shit, and some pretty sick people online, thus it's a good thing they backed down, though they should ditch the rest of the related "features" too.

How do you hide your friends list on facebook. Even from your friends?

Just go to your pirivacy settings and it's all there. Well, I'm not sure if what you specifically ask for is possible but there's a lot of things you can set to be viewable by "only me" and not even by friends or friends of friends. Why would you add someone you don't want others to see though? Just delete that person if it's not possible.

I guess I don't like friends mixing, or people using friends accounts to view my info.

On your friends box on the left, there's a pencil icon in the top right.  Click that and choose Change Visibility Settings.  For See My Friends List, choose Customize, and under Make Visible, choose Only Me.
