I've never been into DC Comics, I was marvel all the way. In recent years through the DC animated shows, movies and the Justice League series and comics, I have been gradually introduced to them. I find that there are tons of similar superheroes, people with the same powers or M.O.

Which ones can you think of? I can think of maybe close to 10 but I'll just list the one.

Firstly you all know the Hulk.

But do you know Solomon Grundy from DC comics, a similar dimwitted, hulk like character?

In the late 19th century, a wealthy merchant named Cyrus Gold is murdered and his body disposed of in Slaughter Swamp, near Gotham City. Fifty years later, the corpse is reanimated as a huge shambling figure (composed partly of the swamp matter that has accumulated around the body over the decades) with almost no memory of its past life. Gold murders two escaped criminals who are hiding out in the marsh and steals their clothes. He shows up in a hobo camp and, when asked about his name, one of the few things he can recall is that he was "born on a Monday". One of the men at the camp mentions the nursery rhyme character Solomon Grundy (who was born on a Monday), and Gold adopts the moniker.

I see you guys are mega interested in this thread. Nyaa

So here is another. You know Hawkeye from the Avengers?

DC has Green Arrow, a bow and arrow guy.

Although Green arrow is a bruce wayne like billionaire and anti-establishment.

I thought Robio would come up with something.

Here, Marvel's Ant Man who shrinks himself

DCs the Atom who... shrinks himself.

It's actually pretty hard for me to see a lot of the comparisons these days since I've been reading these characters for decades now. Sure on the surface a few are similiar but just a few issues in and you'll see the differences. Case in point:

DC - Batman - Millionaire playboy by day/costumed vigiliante by night dressed in black vs. Marvel - Moon Knight - Millionaire playboy by day/costumed vigilante by night dressed in white.

On the surface Moon Knight gets labeled as a white knock-off Batman, but there are tons of differences. Their motives, skills, powers, methods, etc are all night and day different. Bruce Wayne is out there for vengence on his parent's murders. Moon Knight is a schitzophrenic mercenary who keeps thinking he works for an Egptian god. Very different.

Image comics Supreme too.

Is Sentry related?

I think Gladiator is very different, he's a purple alien of the Shiar. With a huge crest on his noggin.

Yeah, that is one I was thinking of, Flash is miles better though.

I know what you mean. Superficially the superpowers are the same but the characterisation is all different.

I think comic companies are in a bit of a dilemma, they can't kill off their money making characters but that leaves readers safe in the knowledge that the stories will remain safe. So they kill off the man and then replace the superhero in the same or slightly altered costume. Or do some time bending event.

Collecting comics is a fecking nightmare though. I just recentely got back into it and I wanted to collect many years worth of stories.

For instance I wanted to get Utopia and the list was:

The core storyline. The read order for the main act is:

Chapter 01: Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Utopia #1 (one-shot)

Chapter 02: Uncanny X-Men #513

Chapter 03: Dark Avengers #7

Chapter 04: Uncanny X-Men #514

Chapter 05: Dark Avengers #8

Chapter 06: Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Exodus #1 (one-shot)

Epilogue: Dark X-Men: The Confession #1 (one-shot)

Aftermath: Dark Reign: The List - Uncanny X-Men #1 (one-shot)

Collected editions:

Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Utopia (collects)

Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Utopia,

Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Exodus,

Uncanny X-Men #513-514,

Dark Avengers #7-8,

Dark X-Men: The Beginning #1-3,

X-Men Legacy #226-227

Dark X-Men: The Confession

Dark X-Men: The Beginning (collects)

Dark X-Men: The Beginning #1-3

X-Men Legacy #226-227

And marvel collected editions are not good value compared to DC. Marvel collections are usually between 160-220 pages or something whilst most of the DC collected GNs are like 330 pages.

GG look at the powers of Gladiator

"Gladiator possesses a number of superhuman capabilities as a result of his unique alien physiology including superhuman strength (capable of shattering a planet)[10],superhuman speed, stamina and durability (capable of withstanding an explosion equivalent to a supernova);[53] reflexes; heat vision (stated as "hotter than a star");[54] frost breath[55] and is capable of warp speed flight (measured as "a hundred times the speed of light").[53] Gladiator's abilities increase and decrease in accordance with his level of confidence[52] and he is vulnerable to a certain form of rare radiation.[56]"

Even vulnerable to  certain for of radiation. Kryptonite much?

There is a easy solution for that. Start collecting Manga and European comics. They all end. Even the ones that last for years. Plus the stories are much better, the superhero comics all have shitty writing. Everything that happens unhappens, like an eternal soap opera.

But Gladiator lives in space as a rent boy of the Shiar. He's like completely removed from Clark Kent in his newspaper office and the visual design is radically different. Also, he's pretty weaksauce compared to superman who is the strongest character in DC comics. In the marvel universe Gladiator is nowhere near being numero uno.

Is there anyone else who likes the whole Marvel cosmic characters like Silver Surfer, Quasar, Captain Marvel, Gladiator, Galactus, Tyrant, Nova etc?

Well if there's one benefit, you didn't miss out on shit when it came to Utopia. It was a weak storyline, and frankly it was little more than a rehash of storyline from 2 years earlier when the X-men moved from New York to San Francisco.

I'm a sucker for exceedingly powerful characters, although the only information I have available are their wikipedia entries, since I'm not a comic buff or collector. Guys like the Beyonder, Molecule Man, the Living Tribunal, Eternity, the Celestials are all kinds of awesome, but they appear once in a blue moon.

Generally I prefer the street level characters rather than the cosmic ones. Just not a huge fan of characters with god-like powers. However, in recent years Marvel has done a really good face-lift to their cosmic characters. The Annihilation books were both very good, Guardians of the Galaxy was great while it lasted, and the Thanos Imperative was fantastic. Unfortunately I don't think the new (and only) cosmic book out there right now, The Annhilators (a cosmic Avengers made up of The Silver Surfer, Quasar, Beta Ray Bill, Ronan the Accuser, and Gladiator) is not very good. Gladiator, who was also a focus of the mediocre War of Kings and Realm of Kings seems to be poison and kills any book he's in for some reason.

Oh and Geek, since you aren't aware Gladiator is more than a rent boy of the Shiar. He's now the Emperor of the Shiar Empire. He got a promotion.

Did you get the Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War, Infinity Crusade, Infinity Abyss, etc? They are all there alot. I've been collecting the big Marvel events from this list there is tons of stuff to get. I'm most interested in getting the Celestials back story in Jack Kirby's Eternals Saga.

Silver surfer is also very good when it comes to Cosmic stories and powerful characters, there is the Herald Ordeal parts 1-6 which is easy to collect and Cosmic Powers where Galactus faces off against Tyrant. And Thanos stuff is always good.

There a few more Thanos stories like Annihilation, The End and recentely the Thanos Imperative. You can find all the details at the link up top. Usually if you check amazon, marvel usually release collected editions.
