Watched more Gantz, wtf? I'm mesmerized by this, not because it's good just because it's completely unpredictable.

Does the anime have bestiality in it like the manga?

Good to see that they're true to the manga's spirit then. LOL

I've been watching this series called Angel Beats.

520fb67593be1.jpg

It's a funny one, starts off a bit weird and muddled but starts to really grow on you. It''s a bit like the original Full Metal panic series in that it has strenghs but tends to split those bits with much weaker stuff that really shouldn't be in there at all.

The concept is great, this guy wakes up in the afterlife, its like being at school except there is an angel who wants to obliterate them. When that happens they are reborn into new lives but it could be as anyone or thing. So some of the kids want to stay who they are and resist Angel. They build weapons and Angel fights and kills them, but no one can really die in the afterlife. What's bad is that they present it as having something to do with computers and programming and so the whole premise is a bit confused at times, they would do well sticking to one angle instead of God vs Computers stuff.

It's big strength is in finding a peacefull resolution to the angst ridden lives of the main characters in which they can pass on to new lives. If the whole series was like these moments it would be a great emotionally charged and poignant series. But there's too much confused junk in between to make it really satisfying.

Finished Angel Beats, sad yet happy ending. It was decent as a series overall.

Tried Clannad After Story, what am I watching here? Doesn't seem to be going anywhere or be about anything.

Seems you have to watch Clannad first. DOH

Funny how Angel Beats stays with you. It perhaps has a bigger impact once it's over than watching it at the time. There are two scenes in particular I rewatched on youtube and it nearly brought me to tears. Reading the comments everyone else was shedding man tears too.

After GG's recommendation of fullmetal alchemist brotherhood, I started watching fullmetal alchemist (the original series) ... I'm kind of OCD about not doing things in chronological order even if I know it's of no significance.  Have watched three episodes today, hope it maintains my interest.

It has to build up before it gets really good, mainly because of how weird it is.  And yes, it stays plenty weird, and the ending is, well, weird.

I just got to the episode past the two massive statues, enjoyed that stuff. Does the dog being in the team get explained?

The original series is a lot slower going and feels more like a slow building tv series. At the island episode that is where it diverges from the original manga which wasn't complete at the time. It's still a great anime series but once you watch Brotherhood your eyes will be popping out of your head and your face will hurt from grinning. You may momentarily forget to breathe during the final confrontations too.  The good thing is that Funmation who dubbed the English version used exactly the same voice actors when they did Brotherhood so it feels great in continuity terms.

I've watched some more stuff since I last posted.

Saw the first 4 episodes of Clannad Pretty decent but seemingly meandering meaninglessness so far? The title of the anime could be "Nice Guy helps random Girls in School for No Particular Reason" it's sometimes funny and seems like at some point it will get gut wrenchingly emotional like the Clannad After Story bits I saw, which I assume is the sequel series.

Saw the first 4 episodes of Hellsing Ultimate

Apparently this is the true to the manga version. I watched the first few episodes of the original series and it seemed like a turd. This is a bit better and has potential but is marred by shakey British voice actors (it's set in England) and terrible music. It's about a Hellsing organisation which has a powerful noble Vampire as one of its agents who goes out and eliminates supernatural threats. Hope it gets better.

Saw the first 6 episodes of Fairy Tail

About an JRPGish magical guild called Fairy Tail where the magicians get jobs from the guild post it board. It's pretty entertaining and wacky, fairly enjoyable to watch so far but nothing brilliant. The main magician is looking for his surrogate father, a dragon who has vanished. He's helped by a talking cat. Yeah it's that kind of series.

Also saw Beserk movie 2:

Not sure why this is being released in movies.... I recently discovered a box set on Amazon for the series with all the episodes, for some reason they mashed together the episodes into separate movies? Anyway, part 2 is far better than part 1 and things are getting interesting. Not top draw but still a good watch.

I'd like to give Angel Beats a tentative thumbs up for viewing. It's just different enough and interesting enough to stay with you. There's some weird crap, but it's worth it overall I would say. You know by the end when you've grown attached to the characters and it feels like the last ever day of school and you're sad you'll never see them again.

A minimal piece of backstory is given for the dog, but not much else as far as I recall.

I finally get the Bleach love.

Okay season 1 is fairly innocous, but watchable. Then this story arc begins where one of the characters is taken to the spirit world. It sinks you into this scenario and you watch enough of it to think: yeah this is pretty interesting.

I recentely finished the arc and you realise that you've watched basically one story over two seasons of the show (S2 and S3) which is about 35 to 40 episodes of this and it's been really compelling and interesting all the way through that sustained. There's a central conceit you have to accept, like in 24 where you know Jack will never die, but get past that and there is some interesting and involving stuff here. It's basically a series of samurai like showdowns, vaguely reminds me of MGS boss confrontations/deaths with frequent flashbacks and lots of twists.

Season 4 is a bit bleh so far though.

Also, watching more of Hellsing Ultimate (true to the manga good version not shitty original Hellsing)

And it's pretty great too. If you grew up watching stuff like Vampire Hunter D and Fist of the North Star (the movie) then this wil sink you right back into that era only looking much better. It's super violent and sometimes morally conflicting in that the main good guy is horribly sadistic, a monster. But it's more 90s ish violence like the above two films. The story is getting better and visually it always looks good.

Really enjoying Fairy Tail now - it could be called: JRPG: The Sitcom

Very light hearted fun show. There was recent storyline about a demon trapped on an island that cinched it.

There was this hilarious exchange between 3 characters that almost had me in tears, you had to see it.

CHICK: (looking at wound on dudes head) "I think it will leave a scar"

DUDE1: Whatever, I don't care as long as you can see it, it's the invisible scars that sting.

CHICK: You're so deep.

DUDE2: (looks at dude 1 funnily) Wait, so you have invisible scars?

DUDE1: Shut up Natsu!! Whenever I say something cool you have to ruin it!!

DUDE2: That was cool?

LOL

Also watching so much anime I have noticed something, these anime manage to do something that's pretty rare in the western films/tv. They seem to be able to regularly  recreate that feeling like when you were at school with your buddies, carefree and happy. And you gradually grow attached to these characters as if you are the unseen member of the group and by the end you are sad to see them go. It's very nostalgic in that way. I like it a lot.
