I can't recall if the movie explained Sophie's curse properly. The movie basically said that she had her youth stolen, which I understand, but at the same time, it's quite confusing. Because at times, she's either the old form you see for 75% of the movie, and other times, she's a grey haired, but regular looking Sophie. It's never explained how or why it's like this.
I did watch it in English though, so I have no idea if the Japanese version talks about this at all.
Yoda, I've seen Akira. I dug it, though the ending confused me a little. I should watch it again though.
But not now. I has Ghost in the Shell to watch.

One of the first animes I saw, and it's still one of my favourites. However it does have pacing problems IMO, and by God are they annoying after you've read the manga. The pacing is virtually no better than Steamboy.
As fro Howl I really enjoyed it. I can't actually remember if I saw it in English or Japanese, but you cannot not love a Ghibli film if you see at the cinema even if the dub is crap. They just look too amazing!
i seriously couldn't see anywhere for them to go from howl, in terms of advancing the animation and i'm kind of glad Ponyo is sort of a step back in that respect, with it all being hand-drawn and not so advanced looking.

I can never remember.
Akira is good, I was fan back in the day when it launched, have the special edition on DVD. It's.... complicated sci fi stuff. For the time it was great. I think the films main draw is that it inspires your imagination to fill in the gaps and wonder what happens next.

Don't bad mouth Steamboy the pacing is incredible, a balls to the wall non-stop action sequence that lasts 45 minutes + at the end. It's breathless. Otomo rocks.

I took her age switching to be completely metaphorical. So at moments you could see her true face beneath the curse. It was just reminding us of who she was. Some of it happens in dream sequences too.
The problem with the english dub vs Japanese isn't translation, but performance and emotion. The english voice actors are dreadfully dull and monotone and in no way capture the raw emotion of the characters. Just like Mononoke...
Now it gets really hard, I'm into the mid-range section where all films are difficult to separate. Now it becomes like giving a game an 8.5 or an 8.6
I'm going to tentatively put Porco Rosso here.
So Nausicaa, then Porco.
When I watched the japanese version, I found the film fairly flat, sometimes boring. It wasn't until I watched an hour of the better restored english dub dvd that I came to really enjoy it. I can't comment more till I go through the whole thing again, but it has that hard to define Miyazaki quality about it. Lots of little touches that make the film special.

Shame though, movie is FAN-BLOODY-TASTIC otherwise.

You remember it wrong. It starts slow, has an action scene on the train, then its slow for half an hour, then it has an action scene that lasts for 45 + minutes that runs right to the end of the film. Right up to the final reel.

Not only that they put this rubbish sound distortion over the wolf characters. Minnie Driver didn't capture the character either, she played it like stereotypically villainess.
Just watch the japanese dub. The Spirited Away english version is great though.

Ponyo. I have been waiting for something like 9-10 months since seeing it to get it on dvd but f******** Disney have made Ghibli delay the dvd release as usual and there is no affordable HK dvd release availible.
It's not even out in US cinemas till August I think, but I can get the Japan dvd with english subs Region 2.
It's out TODAY.
Do you guys think I can flog a dvd on ebay for that much after watching it again?

Oh shoot, I went and did it. This is what you do to me Disney! There is no cancelling or returning this item according to the site. Should be with me by the end of July, but hopefully sooner.

Okay next up after Castle in the Sky comes Nausicca:
Nausicca
It's old so its not as flashy as later movies, but if you actually watch it and then watch Mononoke you will find many parellels. Miyazaki somehow makes a film about giant maurading insects, both meaningful and insightful. With his usual enviromentalism thrown in to boot.
It's all about imagination and delving into something completely different. Special mention should go to the vehicle designs which are hallmark. It has great pacing too, with the carefully handled villains who are more complicated than the usual fare.
