Tomorrow The Battle of the Five Armies hits theaters and I will be going to the first showing. Yeah the last Hobbit wasn’t great, I blame the horrible decision to make this three movies. But hey it means we get one last movie to enjoy this amazing world. This last movie should be war porn, I am expecting an incredible spectacle of epicness.

But it is bitter sweet as it is all over for Middle Earth after this, well till someone remakes all the movies 30 years from now.

I thought the Desolation of Smaug was way better than the first movie.

YES!!!!!! THERE IT IS!!! Thats the feeling I have been waiting for all year! Movie of the year!!!!

I am so pumped right, I need to see it again, it is pure Middle Earth porn. Jackson was like “how much cool shit can I fit into one movie”. The first ten minutes of this movie shits all over the second one and it doesn’t stop from then on, just a non stop barrage of awesome at your face, in 48 FPS. If you don’t like action then forget this movie cause its like an hour and a half of fighting out of 2 hours and 15 minutes, easily the shortest of all the movies but the most action packed one.

It also manages to have that heart that holds the entire series together. A story of bravery, friendship, sadness and joy. I loved the way it ended, it was beautiful, perfection.

Now it is the hobbit so everything is to a lesser degree than LOTR. For instance there is a huge war but it never has the weight and danger of ROTK. Everything is a bit more lighthearted cause it is based on a kids book. Also the motivation for some of the characters is silly in this fully realized world. LOTR deals with the battle to save the world from pure evil, its a fantasy take on WWII, you feel the danger and the oppression of the evil taking over. In this one its like “I want my shiny necklace, to war!!!!”, it’s a kids book, the motivations are so simple. Jackson trying to justify motivation like that is kind of funny but whatever, it leads to awesome action.

The only thing that I didn’t care for is this alfrid character who almost becomes jar jar. Why is he there? Everything else was just badass awesome. Even Saruman is badass in this movie. So yeah go see it.

Wrong World War, dude. Also, good versus evil or materialism? I'm gonna say the latter is thematically more complex. WinkWink

He took inspiration from both but LOTR resembles WW2 more than WW1.

Well WWII is the closest we have come to the world joining forces to fight what was practically pure evil. Most of the other elemets like the industrail war complex, the loss of innocence, post traumatic stress can be any war. WWII is the biggest war the world ever had, it just makes for a better story.

First point is a narrative much stronger (and more widely believed) post-war, so wouldn't necessarily be that relevant to when he was writing it. Joining forces against a common evil is a pretty big cliché anyway. Don't underestimate the size of the First World War...pick and choose your estimates, and it's bigger than the Second. WinkWink Still, I don't see how "it makes for a better story" results automatically in it influencing LOTR. Interesting interpretation in any case.
