I installed a full version of Windows 10 on my puny new 7" tablet yesterday, mainly as a testcase for my dektop and Surface Pro2 I use for work.  After being warned that I would be put in a queue, which could stretch back for days or even more than a week, I was permitted to upgrade after 3 or so hours.

So far, so unimpressed.

If Win8(.1) was an unholy merging of tablet with desktop OS, then this is the bastard child it made with a Lumia Winphone.  The whole UI seems to be created with all sizes of screens in mind, making sure that whatever you do, it'll be readable on a 4" screen.  Where swipes from left or right would bring up elegantly designed sidebars with clear pictograms, now they bring up these huge, quarter screen covering pages with a multitude of seemingly random buttons to switch unneccessairy things on and off.  When you could easily view all your apps and programs on the second page of the Start screen, now you have to scroll through them alphabetically and single file, as on Winphone.

The startbutton is back in full functionality, which for most seems enough legitimation to celebrate the arrival of the second coming of Christ.  But it's been bloated with metro tiles, making the clean startmenu of old feel bloated.  The Metro style startscreen still exists, but it's hidden away as 'tablet mode'.  There's a new browser called Edge, but actual Internet Explorer is available as well.  There seem to be less options for customization, both of the desktop and the 'tablet mode'.  Parental control has been 'simplified', which translates into less options, like not being able to switch off internet access completely.

The only true usefull innovation I've seen so far is that you're able to have different 'desktop layouts' saved at any given time.  Want to have your browser next to your word sheet, but also want illustrator to be easily accessible without having to fuss with different windows every time?  you can switch back and forth as easily as you could switch between open apps on Win8.1.

I haven't spent enough time with this to form a final judgement, but first impressions don't bode well for me upgrading my proper PC's to windows 10 within the year.  Where Win8.1 showed us a clear vision of an elegant OS that could work both on a tablet and a desktop, Win10 just seems to pile on more stuff, resulting in a more cluttered and less visually pleasing OS.  All the things people 'hated' about Win8.1 are still there, they've just been hidden a bit better, while other things have plainly been dumbed down.

Of course, this is just my opinion.  I think Aspro has been trying Win10 for a while now, maybe others have upgraded as well?  How do the rest of us, bold OS pioneers, feel about win10?

I saw it demoed on a tv programme and it looked very messy. I will probably stay with w8 for a good while until the w10 free offer expires.

I like it well enough, but I skipped 8.1 and use a regular PC, no touchscreen and no tablet. Upgrade process was painless, and the OS itself seems fast and responsive. I also haven't found any compatibility issues yet. Edge is a pretty good browser as well in its own right and it made me finally ditch chrome for good.

I can see how you could like it coming from Win7.  My best friend did the same and he's loving it as well.  It just seems a step back from Win8.1 and very similar with what we saw happening with Apple's mobile OS.  It was very elegant and well designed, but the vision got muddled as it was updated.

I don't see what the big deal is with Win10. Its OKAY....but I still prefer Win7 just because its a simpler, more streamlined OS.

Going into your control panel and shit like that seems overly complex in Win10, and I didn't like the new media players at all. The best thing about it I could see, was the weather panel and the XBOX app.

I've been using it for months, and the latest builds have been very stable. Certainly better than 7, and let's not even bring up 8 shall we? I prefer the look of it over 7.

But hey, I love change, love tinkering, so naturally I'll enjoy whatever is newer.
