Health & Fitness? *munches on a footlong hotdog, and washes it all down with a chocolate milk shake* I'm out.
To the point of "why bother", keeping your body active and healthy has a lot of unintended consequences. For many years I figured I was healthy as long as I was "not fat". But like I said, I had muscle pain all the time, I was depressed and anxious a fair amount. After getting back into regular exercise one day I noticed I hadn't had a migraine for at long time. Then I ran into someone who asked me how my back was -- and I realized I had not had back pain for a long while. When I started becoming more active, those health goals did not even occur to me as being a possibility.
If your environment allows, getting outside on a daily basis alone has a very positive impact on your mental condition. If you can combine some exercise with that, all the better. What's the down side in giving it a try?

All wise words and I have tried before. What usually happens is my situation doesn't change so life still feels a little pointless and then there is a huge period between end of September to spring next year when it's too fucking cold to excercise and I hibernate.

I own Wii Fit and both EA Sports games. That should help as well.
Those are quite good products, and I have been using them (fairly consistently) over the last couple of years, and have seen noticable results. Wii fit is more of a "game" and it's not a very intense workout, but it can be fun and it also give you info on your bmi and help you keep track of your weight (even though that can be a double-edged sword). I don't use wii fit that much anymore but it may be good to get you started, especially if you are finding EA Active to be hard work.
I used the first EA Active on the Wii for a considerable length of time (I went through 3 resistance bands) and it's really helped me not just to get fitter but also to gain some definition (people would always assume that I went to the gym). I am very pleased with the results of using it.
I just started using EA Active 2. I bought the PS3 version so that I wouldn't need to hold the wiimote and nunchuck and have the option to hold dumbells instead. At this stage I want it more to compliment my daily run (5 miles) which is by far the most strenuous exercise I do. It's good to do a more comprehensive workout every other day so as I work all sets of muscles. It seems pretty close to the original though it's much more "hi-tec" with the heart-rate monitor and the arm and leg trackers.
Not sure if I would recommend one over the other. Maybe WiiFit to start then EA Active for a harder workout though WiiFit is still useful as it offers a good number of yoga and breathing routines which are fun (and also useful)
Best thing is to get a cross training machine and then with your hands free you can play games. Since you are making a running motion though it doesn't work well for a traditional two handed controller but works fine with the Wii's split controller. Apart from in shooters where you have to aim at the screen.
De Blob is a particularly good game to exercise to with this method as the music is cool too, I always need good music to excercise to. Wii Sports Tennis works too and put the Rocky soundtrack on in the background.
