I am bumping Itagaki for John Romero. Itagaki's nto a clown, he actually looks to be a fairly insecure person who would be normal if I met him.
I'd like to be able to defend Romero, as I did meet him once and he was actually a very amiable guy. But there's little doubt that since 1996 he's become an utter douche. In fact he really deserves his own spelling of the word. From this day forward, he's a "duush."
You ever read Masters of Doom? I've read it twice it is such a good read. It's not slanted against Romero, it's paints an honest picture of both he and Carmack. Romero must have a LOT of personal charisma, but he's one of those guys whose ego can't handle success.
Did not know about the book but I will have to check it out. I lived in Dallas during the mid and late 90's when I was in college and for a few years afterwards. Between the programmer friends I had getting internships at Ion Storm, the guys I knew at Ensemble Studios, and the early Quake conventions I attended, I had a frew (brief) encounters with both Romero and Carmack and heard PLENTY of horror stories about Carmack aka the "Rock star of the videogame world." I'd be curious to see how much I already know and if any of what I do know is mentioned.
The Dallas part is the main part of the book for obvious reasons.
It's well sourced, based on a bunch of interviews with all the main players.

1. Sweet Tooth - Cop out? Maybe, but he's the face of a pretty damned big franchise. It's the classic mean fucked up clown and Sweet Tooth does it as well as anyone else ever had and probably just a little better than most.
2. Mr. Do - Old school gaming and old school clowns represent yo!! Also his games are some of the most addicting arcade classics out there.
3. Bonker - Too obscure for you? Tough shit. He's the clown in Clay Fighter and he fights with pies. Fuck the hadoken, that's an ability a true fighter uses.
4. Dhoulmagus - He's a clown. Technically he's a jester but he's got make-up on so that makes him a clown. Plus he's possessed by a powerful demonic entity. That's pretty impressive if you ask me.
5. Ronald McDonald - How many other clowns are featured in 2 video games huh? How many?? Ronald gets a spot on here.... and my love of his coffee has nothing to do with it.
