This is definitely the first time we’ve created a game this large. We didn’t know where to start. So it happened to be there was a team that was working on creating a larger world. And this team was a group of younger developers. So we had our old programmers from the Zelda team take a step aside, so we could introduce this new group of programmers.

But then these new, younger developers had no clue about how past Zeldas had been created. The group of new staff actually would ask us, like ‘Well I know that it’s been done, traditionally, in other Zelda titles, but why does it have to be that way?’ And among those questions there were some I just couldn’t answer, that I didn’t know the answer to myself. That was because I just took those things on as a tradition, and I didn’t really know why the tradition existed.

When you think about it, maybe those things really didn’t need to be there in the modern world, those traditions. So I started destroying these traditions I’d inherited in the series one by one. But it’s a process that takes a lot of time. And because we were destroying everything we’d done in the past, and rebuild new ideas from the ground up, that was the hardest thing, and it’s really taken a long time to create the thing I

We know that there are Monolithsoft staffers working on the new Zelda, whose help should be invaluable in producing such a large open world. I would assume that was who Aonuma was talking about.

I cannot find the full quote but Miyamoto also said that there was a younger team looking at other peoples HD games, analysing them, breaking them down and seeing how they could add Nintendo like twists on the formula. This is what BOTW is, but he says that they are challenging themselves to produce something new and that a new kind of Mario was coming, to be shown at E3 next year or the year after.

We can also see Splatoon which was by a young team.

So what are the implications for future Nintendo games influenced by other developers HD games? First thing I would say that is obvious - open world games.

So open world Mario would play more like Mario Sunshine but with no load screens or seperation, everything would be like a massive open world platformer playground. What about Metroid?

The ability to freely fly about like the mechs in XCX in an open world Metroid game? A Paper Mario without a side on view, more like an into the screen Banjo like platformer - although Mario couldn't be Paper thin then.

How about a Splatoon single player campaign that was like Halo/COD crossed with Splatoon? Good, organic AI, a campaign story, voice acting etc.

Animal Crossing open world? A massive online animal crossing with different regions influenced by local cultures like a Japanese town, Indian themed town etc. with multiple people online at the same time from different regions?

What are your thoughts on new ideas or how Nintendo could incorporate features from other games? And are you pleased with Nintendos shift to a new generation of developers?

I welcome new, younger talent.  Zelda has been stuck in this rut where your hand is held through most of it.  Let players get lost, explore a little, discover their own secrets.  They seem to be scared of alienating gamers if they don't explain everything or if there's a slight challenge.

As for Mario, get rid of the bland, boring NSMB and move on.  Galaxy feels fresh, try something crazy like that.  We don't need a Mario Galaxy 3, but something that feels as revolutionary as it.

Best thing they ever done. Nintendo needs to stop living with old game conventions, become modern and innovate in the modern space. I can't wait to see what they do with Mario next. Emergent gameplay Zelda is a crazy concept I never even thought of. Can someone make metroid.

How would they HD-a-fy Metroid game?

I just invented a new term.

I guess it would play like a FPS, with multiplayer online (yikes)

Or like Federation Force Nyaa

GG, you ideas are just horrible. Open World Mario game, fuck no! Mario works better as a linear game. Zelda is open world, but so was the very 1st one. Also Link Between Worlds also had a ton of freedom. So it makes sense that the new Zelda is open. And you are straight up butchering Metroid and Splatoon, shame on you!

Yeah Skyward Sword had too much of this. Which is a shame, because they did innovate a lot with that game.  Link Between Worlds fixed this, so at least they learned their lesson. It seems that BoTW will also follow suit!

NSMB games really need to change their artstyle and music, that is the blandest thing of the games.

Yes Nintendo should start copying western games like the rest of Japan.

New perspectives and it becomes more probably Nintendo will actually do something fresh and well thought out. Nintendo is way too ass backwards on one too many things, and needs some much needed youth. Japanese games in general to be honest. The fact that of noteworthy Japanese game directors, the only new name drop in the laundry list of dudes like Miyamoto, Mikami, Kamiya, Suzuki, etc is Miyazaki of From Software is a bit worrying.

Good to see Iggly back.

As to your comments, Nintendo said they were looking at other peoples HD games seeing how they could produce something similar with a Nintendo take on it, that's why the biggest inference is open world.

Think about all the "AAA" games of today. How would Metroid look/play and feel if it were developed in the same way. What changes would there be?

Honestly I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not.

As far as Mario goes I think taking a cue from Meatboy would be the best idea. Make the game hard again.

The idea of making the game accessible for everyone, and then adding challenges, collectibles and post-game content for more experienced players was nice idea. I just don't think it really accomplished much in the grand scheme and ultimately made 2-D Mario feel dumbed down. The multi-player action on the otherhand was excellent, but a major feature focused around a way few people play anymore (couch co-op) just doesn't seem like it's worth the development time.

Just focusing on good design and challenge I think is enough. Platformers are everywhere thanks to the indie scene, but good polished ones are still a rarity. And if a 5 year old can't beat the first level than make him plaotillbhe gits gud.
