I tried changing the file extension to .avi and that made the computer recognise it as a video file. But when I try to open it WMP doesn't recognise it and it wont run.

Files ending in .001, .002 etc. are split files, comparable to when you have multiple RAR files.  Get the other files, and use a program to join them: http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/.

You may actually be able to use an archiving program you already have, but that depends.

WMP doesn't like most .avi files. Try Gom Media Player. It's free, and it'll play just about everything.

But I wanted to convert it to a dvd file to watch on a dvd player using this:

If it worked in WMP theres a better chance that it will work if I convert it. Well to me.

Well, you could always try to convert that .avi file to MPEG-2 (the format DVDs use) or WMV. Try Any Video Converter. I've used that program many times to convert Youtube videos. It should work with .avi files too.

I'm trying now with the program above. I think it will work. I should know in 20 minutes or so.
