Anyhow, I shut down the PC and then without warning it starting installing an hours worth of updates to vista. Now the problem is gone apparently.

I'd still un-install Norton as completely as you are able to figure out and if you live in a multi-user home get nod32, or if you are the only one on the computer just have no anti-virus and be careful on the net (as you browse in Opera).
Windows 7 is coming out and from all accounts it is shaping up to be the best Windows OS yet. I would not update to it, just get it on your next computer. My favorite OS is Ubuntu (which solves all the virus/ update problems), but you are severely limited with games.

If you're going to use an anti-virus, I'd suggest just using Microsoft Security Essentials. Though I also fall in the no AV camp.
So you did take the Linux plunge. I recall you talking about looking at trying it a while back as I was moving over. I go for Mandriva, though. Windows Genuine Advantage has put me off of ever spending money on a Windows OS.

aspro said:^Yeah, I'm running Kubuntu for a few months now. The laptop I use bricked and I could not find the restore disc, so I was more motivated to finally make the jump. For whatever reason the Internet Overlord in this country does not count a Kubuntu download against your monthly bandwidth allocation, so that was that decision made (probably an education thing since the university's in the region use it).

I can't stand GIMP. I generally use Kolourpaint for anything simple, and for any actual design I jump over to Windows for an old version of Photoshop. But proposed layouts for GIMP 2.8 look awesome.
Be aware of the awesome command line tool ffmpeg. You can use this to do pretty much any file conversions for audio and video files. I use it with the podcast to rip audio from Youtube videos. For example
ffmpeg -i get_video.flv audiofile.mp3
and out comes a perfect mp3 file I actually have an ffmpeg Windows binary, but it's not easy to find.

I have vista (f*** me) and norton internet security. Norton says everything is fine but windows security is telling me that the firewall and malware protection is off. Norton says otherwise.
If I try to turn on windows firewall or malware, Norton tells me that it will clash with its operation.
WTF is going on?
Not only that, ad-aware spyware detector starts a scan but never finishes it.
