When I was a teenager we used to go out to cheap, very cheap Italian restaurants and feel like grown-ups.  $1 slices, iceberg and carrot salads with vinegar. The food was terrible in retrospect, but the place had table clothes (albeit plastic coated) and that made it sophisticated.

Many Italian restaurants are really just a single step up from fast-food places. It's usually no more than a dollar more, but that extra dollar per meal buys you a table cloth, low lighting, a fake flower in a vase at the table, and plastic cups instead of paper ones. My first date was at place like that called Cristo's. Worst pizza on earth. In retrospect, I would have been better off going to McDonalds, but it wasn't until date #2 that I discovered that.

That's the place.

One thing about Chinese food, it's the only place that you'll see people of many different cultures and races.  Chinese food unites everyone.

And oddly enough, it's rarely resembles anything like actual Chinese food.

It's true. I once atteded a 12 course traditional chinese wedding banquet (In LA's chinatown no less), and there was nothing that resembled anything from my usual western chinese food restaurants.

Lots of whole body animals being delivered.

There's an authentic Chinese place that opened up near me a few years ago called Taipei One. I got very excited about getting to try out authentic Chinese food. Big mistake on my part.

As soon as I walked in the smell nearly knocked me on my ass. I was the only round eye in the place, and I immediately got looked at like, "why are you here" by the other customers. I don't remember what I ordered now. It wasn't horrible, but it all had a strange texture and I swear there were slugs in it.

At any rate I'll stick to my fake Chinese going forward and keep enjoying the crab rangoon and General Tao's chicken.
