I had an opportunity to go to E3 back in 2003. Every year around this time I start to regret not pursuing that.

In 2003 tickets were a lot easier to come by,  as that's when the show was really becoming more of a party and showcase rather than a place where business got done.  So the people who run the show were very generous with extra tickets for the vendors and everyone else who had booths at the show. At the time I had friends at Ensemble Studios who promised me a ticket if I could get out there.

The trick was affording the flight and accomodations since I lived on the opposite side of the country from E3.  At the time I was working for a list/data management company as a business development manager and I was trying to work a deal with Ziff-Davis who was then the publisher of EGM and a few other game magazines, so it seemed like a good place to meet with them.  So I tried pitching that to the owner of my company to see if they would pick up my costs of going out there.  Write it off as a business trip!!!

Unfortunately the owner of my company didn't feel the same.  He wasn't sure it was worth the $1,500 minimum that it would have cost just for flight, hotel, and misc. Had I pushed it I could have got him to come around, but I didn't want to cash in all my chips with him for something like this since I pretty much knew nothing would really get accomplished there and could possibly cost me my job.  However, I ended up leaving the company a few months later anyway, so I probably could have gotten away with going without any real reprocusions.
