Flip's Twisted World Hands-On Preview
Flip's Twisted World Hands-On Preview

In recent years, it seems as if the 3D Platforming genre has all but disappeared on the Wii with the exception of the Mario Galaxy games. All these classics from the N64 era seem long gone these days, but leave it to Flip's Twisted World to bring back those romanticized days of high exploration platforming with a new take on the genre.

Flip's Twisted World comes out of Toronto based studio, Frozen North Productions, with a small team working on one greatly detailed game. When playing Flip's Twisted World, players may first feel as if they are playing a great classic like Banjo-Kazooie with tons of collection and exploration, not to mention a super vibrant and colourful world. This feeling continues throughout the game, but there is a whole new element in the game which hasn't been seen before. The main character, Flip, has the ability to twist the world around him as he pleases. This turns all the platforming on it's head while exploring these sometimes MC Escher style levels.

Flip is a young wizard who is training under his master, but when Flip enters one of his master's secret rooms, he's sucked into a forbidden magic book, bringing him to a strange new world. A six-personality-sided block helps Flip on his way through this strange world and also helps to teach him how to use magical abilities. All of these flip controls are done with the Wii Remote by holding B and then rotating the remote in the direction you wish to rotate the world. This is all done 90 degrees at a time and has to be done on solid ground. Flip can also rotate off of the world, which resets him to the last checkpoint found in the level, but there are warning arrows to warn the player if the turn is unsafe to perform from where Flip is standing so players don't accidentally rotate the wrong way.

Now for players worried about motion sickness, there really isn't anything to worry about. When things flip around, there is still a good sense of direction, and the levels usually aren't too difficult to wrap your head around in terms of spacial awareness. The levels also don't get repetitive or boring, since a lot of little in-between tasks are laid out to change the pace of the game a bit, as well as having interior levels on top of the outdoor exploratory levels to help out with variance. For example there can be a pressure plate puzzle, or even a sort of chase scene to really move things around and not get too repetitive.

There was also a large variety to the enemies and worlds that Flip travels through. Each world breaks down into multiple rooms and areas with different challenges placed throughout, jumping between indoor and outdoor areas, trying to fight through enemies with multiple abilities and weapons. Some of the weapons also have an elemental power which may be used to activate parts of a puzzle or to unleash on enemies.

To that note, the combat also has essentially three ways to attack. The first basic attack is used by swinging the remote to hit an enemy, three slashes also performs the combo attack that does more damage. The third attack type is a slam attack that consists of jumping into the air and slamming a massive spell book down on enemies. The slam attack did seem the most efficient, but also probably varies from player to player depending on preference of waggle or button attacks.

So, Flip's Twisted World doesn't only look like a great game throwback to golden days of N64 platforming, but a whole new puzzler take on the formula without losing that fun and vibrant edge. Even visually, Flip's Twisted World stands out with really well textured character models as well as wide open spaces that let you see everything that is going on with the map. Even the clever camera can be manipulated to pull way out and see everything before making that next move.

There is no doubt that Flip's Twisted World can roll with the best of them and is looking to be one of the great platformers of the Wii generation when it comes out sometime around this September.

This is looking okay.

Agnates, Leo. Rip this guy a new one please.

Cba, I ripped a new one to the GB quick look. But yeah he doesn't know what he's talking about. Oh no, it doesn't work exactly like every other game out there, that must mean it's dated, it can't be different for good reason like, offering a different experience rather than a clone of other shallow action games, especially since I suck at it! Pfeh. Hell they gave the first Freedom a 4, then Freedom Unite a 7. I dunno where they found the 3 pts worth of improvements since it's just more of the same. And then rate Tri the same as if it's exactly that. I hate idiots that shouldn't review anything but mainstream FPS affect the metacritic/gamerankings rating of games Sad

That review was the guy complaining about how many times he died. Sounds really bad at the game.

Yeah, you'll die anyway for sure, the point is to understand why... I tried my first Great Jaggi quest and it totally owned me but I was dumb and figured that since I beat it in the demo it'll be piece of cake and I went in naked with no armor figuring I'll save the materials for later, better armors. Also with no potions, only using what it gives you which is like 3 first aid kits and 3 rations, and not a ton of items as you get in the demo. Your weapon at this point is nowhere near as powerful either. So, yeah it didn't work out, it had a freaking army of little ones around it and totally fucked me up. So I made my first armor, Hunter's set (holy crap do armors look good in this game, even the early ones), upgraded my weapon and made a few mega potions and stuff to use. This time I'll fucking kill it Nyaa
http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20091231140053/monsterhunter/images/thumb/6/6d/Hunter-Blademaster.png/200px-Hunter-Blademaster.png
You can't see all the details in such a small pic, there are ninja star-like decorations, not just textured but with actual geometry, and all sorts of small details, subtle specular mapping in the metallic parts, the fur on the waist, the open helmet visor, awesome. And yet in gameplay you won't notice half of it, but they still made all that detail! Best characters in a Wii game, imo, even if the textures are a tad low res up close (which you only notice when you zoom in some menus to check armor parts out, in normal gameplay you don't see them so close). Also, they look smoother in game than in these sharp looking renders due to the soft lighting. Beautiful game I tell you.

And yeah I also find suspect any review that doesn't have a single custom screenshot or video honestly. From professional outlets at least, which should have capture gear. That just tells me they sucked so bad they didn't wanna show how they played it. Like in the GB quick look, you see them unable to do shit and complain about this and that yet it's basic stuff told in the numerous tutorials they HAD to go through to reach the point in the Quick Look, if they didn't read them it's their own fault. So you have them pondering how to do this or that, and it ends up being to just press A in almost all cases... Or trying to use an item called "FISHING HARPOON" to kill monsters...

The game seems to have a lot of depth so instead me thinking that I will get the average game and finish it in 10 hours, this game has me thinking that you can play for animal crossing like hours. Certainly seems good value.

I would probably end up like that GI review though, dying repeatedly and whining at everyone here. LOL

Also, did you guys see this? IGN posted the delays for the upcoming Wii games.

It's not so bad.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/108/1085849p1.html

"Although it's taking slightly longer than expected to complete the project, we're confident that fans will find it to be well worth the wait."

Nintendo said the delay of Sin and Punishment 2 was due to close release date of Super Mario Galaxy 2.

"We're striving to provide the best possible pacing for our summer game launches," Nintendo added. "A June 27 launch allows gamers to enjoy Sin & Punishment: Star Successor without having to rush through Super Mario Galaxy 2 (May 23)."

Check the full update below:

For Wii:

- Sin & Punishment: Star Successor (Wii, June 27)

- Metroid: Other M (Wii, Aug. 31):

For WiiWare and Nintendo DSiWare:

- Photo Dojo (Nintendo DSiWare, May 10)

- Earthworm Jim (Nintendo DSiWare, Gameloft, May 10)

- BIT.TRIP RUNNER (WiiWare, Aksys Games, May 17)

- Looksley's Line Up (Nintendo DSiWare, May 17)

- Frogger Returns (Nintendo DSiWare, Konami, May 17)

- Metal Torrent (Nintendo DSiWare, May 24)

PR's PR, I know they have to lie, but wouldn't it be refreshing to hear "we don't want to crowd the core market by releasing two premium titles in the same window, so Sin will be released later in the year" (rather than making it sound like the Nintendo elves are working overtime and doing a sloppy job of developing two games at the same time).

They could even do it with a wry chuckle, "we know everyone hates backlog, so we're better spacing out our premium releases".

Not that I care, just pushes out my M+ purchase later.

Not really news enough to post, but Falcom's bringing out a big announcement later this week.

Falcom is noted almost exclusively for their Y's (pronounced eece, as in fleece) series of games, which have never really gotten a good shake here in the west due to the games chosen to be localized, and in some cases poor localization.  They are a small company and known for their music and commitment to producing quality games no matter how long it takes.  You may also know them from their PSP game Gurumin.

In any case, it will be interesting to see what they are announcing.  Since Y's never really took off here (outside of a loyal cult following) I'd like to see them start something new.

Suda 51 interview.  I love Suda: (and look at the framing on those questions from the asshole reporter - I've added his intent in red).

What's your view on the Wii's capabilities? Do you find it at all restrictive to what you want to do? (Wasn't it hard to make a decent game on what is essentially a gamecube?  Didn't you want to make it on a HD system like normal developers?)"
I don't think that there are limitations to create for the Wii. I enjoy working on it.

And what about the audience? (Most of the people who own Wii's are moms and babies, didn't you know that? Why make an edgy game that is just going to be ignored?)
The original No More Heroes 1 is actually exclusive to Wii. I feel that the game works well with the Wii and fits well with the hardware - so I cannot think about anything else.

Would you consider creating sequels to games you've created in the past, now you've had this success with No More Heroes - particularly Killer 7?
[Sighs] I don't really think that way. Of course it'd be great if I had the chance to do that, but I'm not thinking about it right now. I have no plans to, anyway. (hey asshole, two questions ago I told you I don't like making sequels, give it up already).

Just dressed my pet pig, Poogie in Blue Stripes and Snuggled with him for the first time!

Felyne Pepino in my village is now harvesting Might Seeds, but the damn feral ones outside the village stole my Iron Pick-Axe and a good amount of my Potions and Raw Meat! Damn whining Pussies!

I cry FOUL, I say! I hesitantly took an underwater, "simple" One-Star Quest to retrieve some Monster Guts for a Party and was mercilessly attacked by the Lagiacrus ! ! !

You know... This guy:

The main, big, bad-guy and Box Cover model... T-H-E Poster Boy for Monster Hunter Tri!

I step into the Water for my very first aquatic quest and they throw HIM at me?!

BUGSIE, I NEED YOUR HELP ! ! !

Archie...?

Ask...?

Listen to the guild chick that tells you to run the fuck away and finish your monster guts quest elsewhere? You just need to kill a few ludroth and carve them to complete it, enough of them should be in the area before Lagi's den.

Making slow progress myself, got the cha cha helper, made a new Sword & Shield out of Great Jaggi parts, got a full hunter's armor set, and have a ton of items in my box as I hoard everything every time I head out. I should mine more though, I always forget to bring a pickaxe, or if I bring it by the time I reach the mining spots I'm full of stuff.

Not using the farm much, I don't like it uses resource points for seemingly little benefit, perhaps it's better when upgraded further or with better fertilisers, but I don't have many types yet. Maybe I should be saving resource points for future upgrades to it instead though. The farm was easier to work in MHFU, it basically let you do a bit of mining, gathering shrooms, honey, etc, once after every quest, with more items possible after every upgrade. You didn't have to choose only one to do, whatever was in the farm you could harvest it.

But I guess maybe later on you get more felyne workers in Tri so you can cultivate different types of items at the same time. And they replaced fishing in the farm with the boat fleet which is nicer as it's not tedious. Then again the fishing itself is also better in Tri as more than 1 fish can bite on the bait with each drop.

Qurupecco will be my next hunt after a few more quests. Also, the smith finally acquired the Switch Axe forging but I think I'll stick to Sword & Shield until I can get Longswords crafted, I like speed and agility.

"We're striving to provide the best possible pacing for our summer game launches," Nintendo added. "A June 27 launch allows gamers to enjoy Sin & Punishment: Star Successor without having to rush through Super Mario Galaxy 2 (May 23)."
