Anything less than that and it becomes quite difficult financially given how expensive it is to make games and market them. " link
He said he needed it to continue to invest in the franchise, not to make the game break even.
Meaning, if an "IP like Dead Space" wants to make it into the next generation, they need to see some real support for it. Otherwise they won't spend the money to "make and market" the franchise.
To suggest that a third game in the current engine is going to cost $300 million to make is laughable.
But this is into the weeds, I'm not going to argue this point by point.
The cost or how much it needs to make is not the issue. Its that a goal of 5 million is what they consider the limit to where it would be something profitable or not, that is insane. Very very few franchises have games that sell that much, and DS is not one of them. What is EA smoking.
