About damn time FFS.
Colors are mocked up
They made the impossible possible, but not at their own expense. It's not like they gave up everything and had to spend their own money making it. They got paid a, in my view, reasonable wage whilst making this. They broke even even before one copy was sold. And they did expect it. They estimated their week one sales to be about 60k and ended up exceeding that. It's not like they didn't expect their game to sell as it did, it didn't exceed their expectations by all that much.
^Yeah, but the dudes who make shit games also get to make a decent wage working at companies where their wages are secure. These guys at least went out on a limb.
Official Nintendo artwork
But if the Kickstarter failed, they wouldn't have made it. In which case: their wages for the potential work were secure, and the only risk was the money put into the campaign itself. Which probably wasn't all that much. I say this without having read the article.
EDIT:
Having read it: Yeah, the tone is definitely a little disagreeable, but it's not like it's an actual article. Of course it's partly marketing/written for the fans. And it had some great info, even if the presentation was a little bit melodramatic and disingenous.
Majora's Mask HD Edition confirmed!
It started with everybody in the 70's growing up as KISS fans, with the makeup and shit.
Some people took it a cool way, like King Diamond and all the Black Metal bands. Others took it a very stupid way, like the whole Glam Rock/Metal scene of the 80's dressing up like fucking girls and shit. Add on top of that how over the top everything in the 80's was, and there you go.
Dimmu Borgir:
King Diamond...heh.
Grandmaaaaa! Youuuuve been gone!
Ha!
I'm going to see him in October. The guy is 58 years old now....insane.

The Mario with a mercedes bothers me more than any product placement DLC ever has, not sure why.
But why would western devs make games for the wii u, what is in it for them. This is not a charity, they dont need to help the wii u sell. Clearly not involving the wii u changes nothing to their bottem line, it probably improves it. If Wii U did make them money they would work on it, it is as simple as that. For Nintendo it is a catch 22 they need some third party help to get sells but sales will remain low with little third party support. Still this is mostly their fault as they didnt make a system that is compatiblle with the future, they still have crappy online, their controller is weird. They wanted to be different, this is what different gets you.
This has been their issue since the N64 came out....being stubborn, refusing to follow tech trends, penny pinching on features, etc. Only now with how much $ is involved and how one game can make or break a good studio, nobody is willing to take a chance with Nintendo either way. They have nobody to blame but themselves. They should have done more to build a more diverse userbase and gain better support a long time ago. Then the Wii spoiled them into thinking they could do anything...that console was just as much a curse as a blessing.
I loled at the Metroid anniversary news comment. It is so true, fuck DK already.
With your line of thinking games like Zombi U would never exist. If people were just chasing sales games like Madworld or Red Steel 2 would never exist. Here are a few random things that come to mind as to why devs should make games on Wii U:
1. Maintaining a userbase for the future (next console) instead of pissing off the entire userbase of a system, which is in the millions.
2. Keeping friendly with a business partner
3. Designing with the spirit of invention and creation in mind. Wanting to design something unique and innovative that other systems can't do. Instead of riding the Dudebro train hard, before giving up and becoming an iphone dev
4. Low cost of entry, $1 million per port (confirmed by Ubisoft) it's not a main system costs are shared - digitial distribution availible. 30 peeps at Treyarch port COD to Wii U successfully. Only needs to sell in the tens of thousands to break even.
5. Prestige/experience
6. Not wanting to be major douches - seriously a Gamecube game coming to every system except Nintendos? Fuck right off if you're defending that.
7. Why ask only western devs and not Japanese too?
8. PS4 is being outsold by PS3 in Japan and Wii U is outselling them both week on week.
9. Developers should/could have dropped PS3 like a hot potato when it wasn't selling well too, see how that panned out
10. Going against the grain = a higher profile title. A 3rd party game on U now will really stand out as there are barely any.
11. Both Wii U HW and SW have seen significant increases in recent weeks/months 3x more minimum, much larger gains in some areas, we're talking 379% increase in SW sales across Europe and similar results across the USA. Publishers basically threw in the towel at the start as if things could never improve, they have and could have been higher, if Wii U wasn't missing every new game in existence.
12. Gamers are buying 6 to 10 new games with a Wii U on GAF on day 1
13. Let's not forget the self fufilled prophecy, third parties cultivated this failed eco system in the first place by a weak show of faith. Don't act like it was a natural evolution. Talk all you want about HW sales, PSP was expected to "win" before it even released -before there were any sales- and EA had hundreds of developers making games for it, meanwhile they had 4 developers working on the DS. (This was confirmed by a former EA Employee) They make their bets before systems even release. They made a bet on mobile and gave up on 3DS even though it's sold millions. What's the excuse there for western devs totally skirting the 3DS like a dog turd? They can't make money on 3DS? Bollocks. Is there more money in mobile? Sure but there's a eshop on 3DS too if they want to provide content there.
Most developers have never even released a Wii U game in the first place, they are like the people at pool parties who remain fully dressed and watch other people get wet. This leads to less people jumping into said pool, with everyone skirting around skittishly on the edge.
14. Look what happened when FB released Trine 2 on Wii U. How the profile rocketed amongst Nintendo gamers. There's a chance to introduce franchises that are entirely new to a whole segment of the gaming population. Wii U owners bought Trine 2, they loved Trine 2 and they are looking forward to buying Trine remastered too. There's no reason a well made and well marketed game couldn't do the same. Releasing massively inbred 5th time sequels to the audience obviously isn't the best way to go about things. Mass Effect 3? That's like watching the final 3 episodes of 24.
15. Some games actually sell better on Wii U, Sonic, Rayman, Lego etc. If you have the kind of game Nintendo gamers want, you can do better than on other systems. Nintendo platforms make up like 60% of Sales for games like Disney Infinity/Skylanders. Why are all modern games so serious?
16. Gamesindustry.biz said purchase intent has boosted post E3. It now sits as the same level as X1, i.e there are as many people looking to buy Wii U in the future as there are for Xbox One. And Aspros chart he posted a few days ago showed there were more people looking to pick up a Wii U by the end of the year, than any other system (including PS4). You could see large Holiday sales this year.
It also showed that PS4 + Wii U combo was the go to package this gen. Not X1 + Wii U, not X1 + PS4.
So you're going to have a lot of gamers with a Wii U with a relatively small base of games to choose from. Meaning your game could have a larger exposure there then on systems with a million other games.
I still need to buy Tropical Freeze but it will never come down in price.
