I just watched the Unboxed Rare episode. Such a shame the guys doens't have many views. The quality of his videos are ace. Watching the video combined with Machinama's Rare video, it is easy to see what went wrong with the studio.
The cold hard reality is that Rare has always been Rare. A company that released mostly average games with an occasional gem. However, Rareware was what happened when you had Rare work with Nintendo. While Nintendo let Rare do what they did for the most part, there were a few times when they gave recommendations for what the studio could do, and that really made the difference. Another thing is that Rare, like every studio, is a team. Unfortunately many of their directors and developers left. The reason why they left is because the studio had (and always had) harsh working condition of 18 hour shifts at 7 days a week. It isn't surprising that Perfect Dark Zero turned to shit because everyone involved with Goldeneye was gone. I mean sure the original Perfect Dark was okay but they had some sort of base to work with.
Nintendo likely saw Rare falling apart, so the Microsoft deal was like winning the lottery to them. But as a gamer, the Microsoft deal was salt in the wound. Their game sales were terrible as we all knew, but the quality of their games weren't up to par. As said, Microsoft was often breathing down the studio's neck rather than merely giving suggestions like Nintendo. And again I will repeat myself, the quality of their games weren't up to par. I don't give a FUCK what any XBox fabboy says. Viva Pinate and Nuts and Bolts are a far cry from anything they did during the Nintendo days. It isn't nostalgia because I played Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2 during the Wii days
Diddy Kong's Racing did suck though
. I mean the best game they made since the merger is Killler Instinct which wasn't even made by Rare... The sad reality is that the developers that made Rare Rare aren't there anymore. Much like Sega the studio is a shadow of its former self. But at least Sega went down fighting for life with the Dreamcast and continued fighting with quality titles on the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube for a few years until Sammy really put their foot down. Rare is an example of how company survival isn't everything, because a studio could still be dead without being bankrupt.

I think I'll pick up Outlast this weekend.
They probably went from "stinking rich" to "fucking rich."
Nintendo Tokyo recruiting for a new 3d action game. Pikmin 4 paper Mario starfox Zelda Wii u this year?
If they are only now recruiting I seriously doubt it's for anything this year ... or the next ... or even the one after next.

I still say that Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, Banjo Nuts & Bolts, and Viva Piñata were all very good games that were on par with any other game they've ever made.
No, both are perfect for their unique style. Part 1 for its Asian influences and part 2 for its Western influences,
I like all these games. But to me they weren't instant classics like their N64 titles. I'd also put Star Fox Adventures as their one and only Gamecube title ahead of these slightly.
Until that Canary Islands volcano/tsunami washes it away eventually. Then again, I think I'm fucked where I'm at too.
Paper Mario is the new Wii u game.
No. Kill Bill Vol1 is perfect for it's an homage to old school kung-fu flicks done right. Vol 2 suddenly had to become a Tarantino film and include endless long pieces of inconsequential boring dialogue ... just because. And it's much much worse because of it.
