I'm looking at those wireless joy cons and thinking they might be good controllers for VR.
If motion controls are as good as the Wii motion plus then I am on board.
One of the site's forefathers.
Play fighting games!
It seems officially an nvidia tegra chip in the switch. It will be like a tablet. Not as powerful as Xbox one.
What stumps me more is how they're updating WiiU fames for Switch. It's a totally different architecture, so they'll need to recode the whole thing. Might as well just create true sequels then I'd think.
There's a big difference between using a phone and lugging this thing around. But the point is more that if you can't stop playing a game for a few minutes to look around at the real world you need mental help.
Just saw the credits roll in MH4U. The 'last' battle was pretty unclimatic. A whole battle riding around on a big canon, without having to confront the beast on foot at all? That's not what MH is about...
I also realized that I hadn't seen a rather large number of the stronger beasts, so I took to the internet to see what was up with that. So far I had been doing the Caravan Quests, the kind you get from your friendly quest marm. But as now transpires, it's impossible to see all monsters only doing those quests. You also need to do the online quests in order to even be eligable for some of the more advanced monsters to show up in the regular, offline portion. That just doesn't make any sense. So now I'll need to decide wether I want to battle those baddies enough to invest another 50 or so hours of fighting all the monsters I've seen before... Why can't Capcom just make one big quest pool? Why insist on having about 4 different quest pools, each one hidden further down boring menu's than the last, with only the first being related to the main story? Bah.
Some more thoughts on the Switch:
What's the deal with local multiplayer? It would make sense that when on the go, you can only play with 2 per Switch. It wouldn't make sense to support 4 Joy-con's on one Switch as they probably won't sell them seperatly. But what happens when you're docked? I can't see Nintendo ditching 4 player splitscreen gaming.
I understand that Nintendo is very weary of 'confusing' everyone with a muddied reveal, but seriously, they could have confirmed touch and motion controls. Those things are enough of a known quantity to people by now that not including them has done exactly what Nintendo tried to avoid: make for a confusing message.
I wonder if it'll even have a touch screen. How would touch screen work when it's in the dock? That would make some games unplayable on a TV.
I'll just use the Switch when I'm at home for playing on the tv and off when I'm watching something like a hockey game or wrestling. It doesn't seem like something that would be portable enough for me to game on the go.
Fortune Islands complete. Where are you, Travo?
Not strictly true, it depends if it uses FP 16 or FP32 - GAF says it could reach 1teraflop if it's FP16. Laura Dale also says the dock has more power.
Also GAF are saying the Nvidia to AMD flops doesn't convert in a linear way. Also UE4 runs far better on Nvidia hardware too. But yeah, most people are expecting 500 - 750 GFLOPS.
A standard X1 is around 3.5x more powerful than Wii U. Digital Foundry say that when it sheds the Android OS the performance will be better. I think Nvidia said the PX2 was 40-60% better performance than the x1.
I think the point is convenience. If you can literally pick it up and walk away with it people will. I spend anything from 5-45 minutes on the toilet so if it's a choice between staring at the empty walls for that long or playing a game or browsing the net, I'll choose to use tech. I can imagine taking your dog for a shit several times a day gets old fast, so if you can continue playing Zelda while you dog gets his jollies, why not? Playing late at night, go upstairs with it and continue playing in bed.
Have a train ride home after work - play on the train, come home, drop it into the dock, instantly continue playing. You also have the benefit of having offscreen play and that will include Wii U like offscreen use of apps like Netflix or Crunchroll. The number of times I've wished I could just walk upstairs and take the U pad upstairs for Netflix in bed. Ahhhhh.... so annoying.
My biggest concern is whether you can hook it up to any tv without the dock. I want to flip it between many different tvs. But if the dock does have more tech in it, it'll either be unaffordable to buy spares or not available.
Finally, like PSVR I wish you could feed through any HDMI signal to the portable unit.
I think someone said all games will have to be able to run without touch. It might not even have touch though. I can't tell you the number of people on GAF celebrating that it has no gimmicks. I don't get it personally but there are a lot of gamers who don't like change and just want what they know. Anyhow, I was reading gaf and a thread reminded me of that MCV news that NX would cost much lower than the vast majority of people would expect. The thread pointed out that it doesn't seem to have a camera, a mic, might not even have touch.
Nintendo might even be going with the X1 as a dirt cheap option if that Digitimes article on Nvidia's contractual obligations are true - in that supplying Nintendo with X1s would lose them less money than the punishments they would get by ditching their contracts.
They could literally be ditching functionality for a lower retail price.
I have a hard time believing that the Tegra chip will be such a stellar performer. Seriously, if it was so easy to build a relatively high performance piece of hardware as to just stick an X1 or X2 in there, why would Sony and MS go through all the effort of designing their consoles and not just take the same route? Unless of course this is where consoles are headed. I gues there's little point in discussing it now, we'll just have to wait for more info from Nintendo, and even then there's a chance we'll never know as they don't really care for tech specs no more.
