[ign.com]REVIEW: Monster Hunter Wilds 8/10 "...extremely fun fights but also lacking any real challenge" ign.com editorial impressions

I haven't played Rise, but heard it was already an easier game.  If this is the trend going forwards I don't know if I'll stay invested in the series.  The Eurogamer review mentioned having played for 40 hours (or was it 20?) without failing a single quest.  Taking out friction like they did in Worlds is one thing, but it seems they're trimming away too much of what defined the series.

If you haven't played Rise yet, and you have someone to play with, you might want to give it a shot since it does get dirt cheap. It does start out easier, but it also has a sharp difficulty spike during the second half of the main game. Plus, I found the the final boss to be one of the hardest in the series.

I never felt the urge to play Rise. I played the demo, but just wasn't feeling it. I could play it free though as my son bought it a year or so ago.

I’m very hyped for Monster Hunter Wilds myself. Not too worried about it supposedly being easier. Loved both World and Rise. Played the Wilds beta and loved what I played there as well. I got the Premium Deluxe Edition pre-ordered and ready to go when it launches on Friday.

The last Monster Hunter game I played was on Wii. I didn't get very far, lol.

That would have been Monster Hunter Tri, and I more or less had the same thing happen to me. I got ambushed by a monster while I was exploring, and then got fed up with the game and took it back to GameStop to sell it.

A couple years later when that first big Wii u drought hit. I ended up buying the Ultimate version for the Wii U, and finally figured out how to play the game. Glad I gave it that second chance. Turned into one of my favorite series of the past 10 years.

Really would like to play more Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii. Only played it very briefly. Also want to grab Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate for the Switch. It goes on sale for quite cheap these days.

Sad to see Monolith go.  They had mostly great games in their history:

Here is a list of games developed by Monolith Productions:
  • Blood (1997)
  • Shogo: Mobile Armor Division (199Cool
  • No One Lives Forever (2000)
  • Condemned: Criminal Origins (2005)
  • F.E.A.R. (2005)
  • Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (2014)
  • Middle-earth: Shadow of War (2017)

Shame about Monolith. I really enjoyed the F.E.A.R. and Condemned games. Was interested in seeing how Wonder Woman game might have turned out.

+1

Really enjoying Echoes of Wisdom.  I've completed the first 2 major area's so far.  Playing this reminds me how long it's been since the last top down Zelda game.  If I recall correctly that was Link between Worlds on the 3DS way back in 2013.  The grand 3D zelda's are great fun, but there's something magical about these more compact adventures.  The brevity of it all seems to alleviate it even further, where the whole thing just tightly slots together.  Cutscenes don't take a second longer than they need to be, animation is succint and clearly readable and the whole thing isn't ashamed to just be a videogame.

The inclusion of fast travel points is definitely a concession to the modern age and younger gamers, but with a world so compact and wonderfully realised, I don't see why you'd ever want to use them.

Tri was my entry point into the series as well.  It's sad that the underwater battling hasn't made a return.  It brought something unique to the gameplay and allowed for some interesting monster designs.

Man, I'm really hoping it ends up being a carbon monoxide leak. Otherwise something weird went down.

I first tried Monster Hunter with the first game on the PS2. Rented it and tried it out. Was entirely perplexed by it and only briefly played it before returning it. Didn’t try the franchise out again until Tri on the Wii but World was where everything clicked for me and hooked me on the franchise.

The last level of the Library of Babel is a hellscape platformer, with whirring sawblades assaulting you from every direction with no end.

Even if you die a thousand times the game doesn't offer you any accessibility options.

Edit: did it. Once you realise that there are two moving saws at different speeds it's not bad.

It's still possible the carbon monoxide escaped, but that being said, I do agree it's kind of weird. Plus, one they've now said that only one of the dogs died. Apparently there were some others.

People do some crazy shit due to carbon monoxide poisoning. I've read stories of people who can't account for hours of their lives.

Police are now treating it as suspicious.

Could be bad food poisoning and they fed one dog a piece of something.
