Not sure what happened with this game, the first DKCR was one of the best platformers ever. I loved everything about it. Tons of people think TF was better but I just never felt in a groove with this game like the last one. The levels are all still varied and have great moments but it's not as fresh as it was before. A lot of ideas are reused from the last game. There are very few rhino levels, mine cart and barrel rocket levels fill out the rest of the alternate kind of levels, and it's all just as it was before. The addition of cranky and Dixie don't really add much except make some runs easier. So to me it just felt like more of the same and none of it captured that magic of the first. It's still an extremely well made platformer though. There is no denying Retro is great at level design and constantly adding little variations to each level and world. The boss battles are also really well done; they are a great mix of pattern recognition and skill. Speed running the levels are still a great test of skill. Each level has loads of secrets to find, so like before each level can be played different ways. There is plenty of great content here. Tropical Freeze is simply a safe sequel. The formula is damn great, there is no denying it, but I wish they had done more. |

Funny, GAF says its one of the best 2D platformers every made. I never felt compelled to buy it.

They're both great games, with plenty of challenge, but I never could really get into the momentum of DK. I prefer the 'lightness' of Mario platformers over the bulk that seems to drag DK down.

I played through the original Wii version and enjoyed it. Picked up the Wii U version awhile ago and played through the first few stages. It seems quite good but I need to play more.
