Duck Tales woo hoo! If you are a fan of the NES version buy this game, its made for you. If you have no clue what this is, read on. Duck Tales Remastered is an updated and remixed version of the NES classic. Obviously the graphics have been updated with the characters looking just like the cartoon. New cutscenes have been added with full voice acting from the original cast. This makes the game a must play for fans of the cartoon. The writing is witty and pretty funny, it captures the spirit of the cartoon well. The game is a very old school platformer, only 6 levels all with basic objectives. Where this game shines in is in the perfect controls and the unique pogo stick mechanic that made the original stand out. Wayforward nailed the controls, the jumps are as responsive as they were in the 8-bit days and for those that found the pogo jump too hard on the NES has an easy mode here. The levels have all been expanded on now requiring multiple objectives to get through them, stuff like find 4 pieces of a ship. The levels are not linear, they are like very small maps, which you can traverse as you see fit. The pieces force you to explore every inch of these levels, which was not the case in the original. The added segments work great and fit right into the NES style. Boss battles have had a major makeover as in the original they were very simple. Each battle adds a few more moves and phases to every boss making them a very more interesting encounter. To me all the updates were great right up until the end where they add a very frustrating instant death moment right after you beat the final boss and before you actually end the game. It is far more annoying than fun, thankfully that's just one part of a full game that can take about 2 hours to complete. Duck Tales is not hard at all, it might take a while to get used to at first but for the most part you can breeze through it. It does use lives so if you die 3 times you have to restart a level all over again. Harder difficulties reduce the lives creating a challenge. There are plenty of secrets hidden all over the levels with loads of unlockable artwork and music. There is plenty of reason to play over and over. The NES version has some of the greatest music on the NES, this version has much more complex versions of those tunes but keeps the essence of what made them so catchy. The moon stage music is as excellent as ever. Duck Tales Remastered doesn't try to be any more than it is, its a well done update to an old classic. It may not hold up to modern day games and at $15 it maybe too pricey for such a simple game experience. As a fan I greatly enjoyed my time with game and I think this is one of the better updates of a classic game. |
