Many credit this game, which was ported from the arcade, as being the genesis of run-and-gun over-the-top basketball video game and while that credit should go to Midway's Arch Rivals, that does not diminish NBA Jam for the Super Nintendo in any way. The two-on-two game play includes ridiculously long air-time, flame emblazoned dunks, hard fouls, laser guided passes and plenty of traveling. You pick from any of the NBA teams of the time picking from a handful of players on each team. I always play with a real-life duo that I hate -- John Stockton and Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz. Like most team combinations the big-headed versions of Stockton and Malone have a propensity for perfection beyond the three-point line (and dunks from behind the line as well). The players are large and recognizable on the screen, sound is great as well with a Dick Vitale sound-a-like breaking off exclamations like "boom-lacka-lacka". The game is fast paced, and despite what you may think requires some level of skill to master. Player against a friend is, as always, the best way to play this game, but playing against the computer is more fun that most sports games usually are. |
