I actually enjoyed this game more than I thought I would based on what I heard about it. NG2 stays close to the originals formula, all your moves and solid action is back. Enemies are brutal, coming at you all the time and Ryu has a whole set of crazy weapons and loads of combos to take care of them. In terms of core action mechanics this game is still near the top of the action genre. Where it falls apart is everywhere else.

The level design is pretty atrocious as most levels are simple linear corridors with almost nothing to do but get stuck until you beat waves and waves of enemies. The first game had a sort of open city that you can kind of travel around with secrets to find and such, none of that here. The game takes you around the world but these locations are kind of ugly and bland, especially times square in NY. The enemy variety is another aspect that is far worse than the first game. There is way too much of the same kind of enemy over and over. Boss battles are all over the place some killing you in two seconds with no warning, taking many times to learn its pattern. Other bosses are easily killed the first time you fight them offering up little challenge. There seems to be no boss in between, its either too hard or too easy.

I have no freaking clue why Itagaki decided to change the perfect camera of the first game. NG2s camera decides that looking at the floor or the back of an enemy is a great view for gameplay. You can see the action most of the time, the rest of the time I just kept attacking and dodging cause that is basically all you do in this game, it worked for me. I also noticed that there is no scoring system in this game, I enjoyed the whole karma scores of the first game.

This game is such a disappointment cause mechanically it can be as good as the first but almost all other aspects are worse. Worse levels, worse bosses, worse camera, worse story (I didnt think that was possible). Still the core action is so damn good that I enjoyed my time with the game, frustrating sections and all.
