Desperate Escape is the antithesis of the last DLC episode Lost In Nightmares. DE is non-stop action with gigantic setpieces. It takes place right after Jill is rescued by Chris and shows how Josh and her escape from the island.

This episode is extremely intense, as they throw almost every enemy at you. You basically get a sample of every type of weapon and there are uses for each. There are plenty of enemies shooting at you from a far distance so the sniper rifle has plenty of uses.  The setpieces are huge in scope and well done. Though I feel this episode suffered from the same things RE5 did, which is that some of the areas were so huge that it didn't allow for that careful paced gameplay of RE4. The main area of DE is so huge I was kind of like "which way do I go". Enemies would pour in from everywhere with no real rhythm to it. At times it almost felt like a Mercenaries level.

Spoilers from here on out. The main setpiece of this episode takes place at the heart of some huge base with giant rocket launcher turrets stationed around. You must take out the enemies on these turrets and use them to blow up some walls to advance. This section felt similar to the boat section in Separate Ways but I feel that Separate Ways handled it better.

It does help to have a human partner as it much more fun. The AI is rather usless in this episode, it is good for support but it can't help with any kind of strategy. Since you get all types of guns you want to use them when need, the AI never knows when to use the right gun, it uses the weakest gun on cover mode and the most powerful on attack, there is no way to tell it to use a sniper for long distance or a grenade for crowds. Basically I ended up carring nearly every weapon and had my AI act like a moving item box. It stays alive and helps out, it isn't frustrating, it just sucks having to do all the work yourself when this gameplay is clearly designed for two to work together.

I love that every time you play you randomly get different enemies, almost all types show up. The final area has no boss fight, instead it is a 5 minute survival test with enemies coming at you non-stop. It's a small area with a non stop stream of enemies coming at you. It's a great way to end this episode but I was hoping for a new boss fight.

I like Josh a lot in this, he has some sweet melee attacks. The real star of this is Doug, the suave helicopter pilot that tries to hit on Jill. He has such a badass moment at the end before he meets the same fate as every RE helicopter pilot.   Didn't notice much of anything in terms of story unless I missed a file somewhere.

Capcom did a good job with these DLC episodes, nice contrast between the two. This one is easily going to be the more replayable one, getting high scores is going to be fun has hell. In terms of which one I like more I give the slight edge to LiN because I liked that location much more, it tried some new things, had a new enemy and boss fight. Overall though Separate Ways is better than both of these combined, RE4 is on a different level even when comparing extra scenarios.

Boooo!

I never tried seperate ways. Does it just re-use the same locations and enemies of the main game? What does it do that you need to see other than story?

Most of SW are locations from RE4 but told from Ada's point of view, there are a few area you could never reach but now you can cause of her grapple hook. The last two chapters of SW are mostly brand new areas and boss fights. It's fantastic, it has one of the best setpieces in all of RE4 and a better final boss battle than the main game.
