Tension is a word that is not often used in game reviews, but really, along with frustration and feelings of accomplishment it is one of the things that make a gaming experience enjoyable. If this game, created by Carol Shaw, is not the first vertical scrolling shooter ever, then it most certainly is the first on a home console. In a richly colored world you pilot a low flying plane along a river. Hit the sides of the river, you die. You job is to advance as far along the river as possible while taking out as many bridges, tankers, enemy jets and helicopters as possible. Resource management, and thus the tension, probably makes another first appearance in this game. While you fly along your gas gauge constantly dips, forcing you to seek out fueling depots to replenish your fuel. Addictive, groundbreaking and fun, River Raid is up there with Space Invaders as my favorite Atari 2600 game. |

Hmm, I would've given River Raid a 10, but that's just me.
