Syphon Filter Dark Mirror is the well recieved PSP game ported to the PS2. I have not played a SF game since the PS1 days, I had no real memory of what to expect except for tasering balls. Yes the game allows you to taser balls and it is also a surprisingly well made 3rd person cover shooter.

I played this on the PS2 which allows for a dual analog control scheme. I have no clue how this played on the PSP nor do I want to know, the controls of this version were great. The game is split into bite sized missions lasting about 10 minutes each. Each mission has an objective and side goals to meet and you get scored on how well you did at the end. The game allows you to replay every mission and keeps track of all your stats, this increases replay value considerably.

I had to put myself in the context of when this game came out, 2006 which was right around the time when cover shooters were beginning to take off with Gears. Dark Mirror has to be one of the best early cover shooters cause I find it to be highly enjoyable and functional today. Each level is action packed with lots of enemies to kill. For the most part you will just pop and shoot at enemies, that can get tedious. Thankfully many of the missions change things up. For instance one level takes place in a mansion where use of IR vision is a must. In certain situations stealth is an option and since I am a big stealth fan these lead to some of my favorite moments. Its not like Metal Gear where you can be all stealthy all the time, Dark Mirror is an action game and at many points it forces you into combat. That is probably my main complaint, it offers choice at times but not all the time, too often levels boil down to giant gun fights.

Graphically it looks nice for a PSP port. It's a decent length, something like 7 hours with plenty of unlockables and replay value. From the moment it starts you can feel that this is one well made game. It comes through in the presentation and the gameplay. I can see why it was one of the most talked about early PSP games.
