I expected more from Vanquish as it is a Mikami game and I thought it would bring a more action game like vibe to the third person shooter. Yes its faster than any shooter but in the end you still end up behind cover most of the time shooting anything that moves. Your character main move is the boost, this allows you to glide along the level to quickly move around cover. You also get to slow down time to gun down enemies, problem is this lasts too short and takes to long to recharge. Honestly shooting in slow motion isn't that fun. Where I thought this game would really shine would be some kind of melee component but the melee is practically useless cause after any one hit you use up all your boost bar and end up defenseless. So instead of a game where you are fly around, punching one enemy, flipping around shooting others, knocking fools in the air while gunning them you get a game where you can boost behind cover. The mechanics are cool but they clearly never reach their potential. Strangely absent is any real upgrading system which is a key component of action games. The only thing you upgrade are weapons and that is done is a poor manner and it mostly just extends clips. While mechanically it's a letdown at least the setpieces are incredible. You will some amazing epic stuff like fighting underneath a robot the size of a building. Or fighting on a collapsing bridge. There is so much going on at times you feel like you got dropped into a Michael Bay movie. There is a nice assortment of enemies that range from simple grunts to bastards that take a good amount of skill to take down. There are times where I did feel like I was just doing the same thing over and over, there is nothing else to this game than just shooting, but then comes in a new cool setpiece to make you go wow. The length is rather short but it feels right for a game like this. There are going to be people that take the time to master this game and play it on the crazy hardest mode, to them I am sure this game is a 9. It did not capture me in that way, I wanted a bigger departure from the norm and I only got hints of it. That said its still a really fun action game. |

It controls very well, boosting, aiming and moving in and out of cover is all very responsive. Maybe the only tough thing to do is boost while aiming and shooting in slow mo as that requires you to hold three of the trigger buttons at once while using both sticks to aim. To enter cover you use square, its very sticky but you never enter cover by accident. Switch weapons with the dpad, pick them up using triangle which then swaps whatever weapon you have on you at the moment, you can carry three at a time.

Platinum is merely average this gen. Yeah I said it, Bayonetta is not my thang.
