I'm going to take a moment of your time and a little of your bandwidth and quickly mention a charity I'm working for. It's not really a charity though, it's more of a fundraiser I'm helping out with for a family member. We're trying to raise about $20K for a standing power wheelchair for a family member who has cerebal palsy and is a parapalegic due to it. I won't go into all the details, but her insurance won't pay for it, and so we've been trying to make it happen for her. We're just over 48 hours from the fundraiser's end date, so I figure I'd shake what few branches I haven't tried so far, and that's you guys!
Anyway it's a good cause, to a person who really needs the help, but just as importantly you could consider it your easy way to get Christmas gifts as donations for $10 or more all get things in return. We've got t-shirts for Cannibal the Music and Orgazmo that were donated by a guy who works with Trey Parker. There's a few horror movie t-shirts too if you're into that. Larger donations of $25 or so get you entered into a raffle for some really stellar stuff. For instance there's a table top Tesla coil! Show your friends how electricity works! There's a guy who offered a website and support for a year, and a DVD of the Night of the Living Dead 1990 remake that's been autographed by the whole cast. There's other stuff like a a custom made corset and some fairy stuff but I really can't see anyone here being interested.
The link with the details is here: http://www.indiegogo.com/GoTeamRobin. If you can't help out right now don't worry. It's completely understood. Rough time of year to be doing a fundraiser, we're well aware. But if you can I'd totally love you forever.
4 months looking for charities and going through the motions with them? That's really no time at all in a place like Australia where (presumably) such things are actually set up better. Maybe it's different if you're dealing with cerebal palsy or something more established like that, but 4 months really doesn't sound like any time at all. Unless you meant this stage has been in the works for 4 months, then my apologies for misunderstanding.
Either way it doesn't matter, and what you're doing seems to be working which is the only thing that matters. My most sincere wishes of luck!
No, no. 4 months of running this fundraiser. It started back in August and is finally ending this week. As far as working with charities and government agencies, well that stuff has gone on for ages.
Ah, gotcha!
So what happens now that the posting is ending, but you still need another 4k or so?
We really only need another $1500 or so. We've done a few fundraisers in person and managed to get several thousand in cash that doesn't get counted on the online goal. And we still have one big thing to sell off - a group of signed autographs and posters that was donated earlier in the week. It still won't be enough to get to the goal but it'll push us to under $1,000. After that I'm not entirely sure. But I think it's close enough. Since we're paying cash for the equipment as opposed to using insurance medical companies tend to offer discounts.
So you've pretty much done it then! That's great.
Yep. In fact, as of an hour ago we hit the goal. Great feeling. The family as you can guess is estatic. Anyway, a few of you were able to help out so I just wanted to take a moment and say thanks a lot.
The whole thing was pretty eye opening. People are actually pretty good after all. Who would have guessed?
That's awesome man, so happy for you and your family!
Some good news on this horrific day.
