The House of Mouse can kiss my ass.
You see a few years ago they inked a deal out to distribute Studio Ghibli films in the west. They also bought the rights to publish the Ghibli back catalogue in the west.
Well, part of this deal also makes us wait for dvd releases in foreign countries. Or releases missing english subtitles like Howl's moving castle.
It's bad enough waiting 2-4 years for the next masterpiece, but then Disney force a late dvd release in Japan so their eventual western cinema dub will have more success. What does this mean? It means that Ponyo came out 9 months ago in Japan and we've had to wait all this time for a crappy English dub.
It means that they made Ghibli omit english subs on the japanese R2 dvd release of Howls Moving castle.
(Luckily a couple of months later the Hong Kong R3 release did have them).
And now all these months later Ponyo will be out on Japanese R2, only it costs $50 plus postage on top, just in time for the English language cinema release. For a normal two disc edition. Oh so how much is the special edition? Only $300 plus postage.
I've been waiting forever for this movie to be out on regular old R3 dvd.
The whole point about the internet and importing and dvds is that while it may take over a year to get the same movie released here, we can import it from Asia and be watching it a couple of months after a cinema release in Japan or China, or Korea. Making us wait a whole year is like waiting for the next Final Fantasy game to be translated for all european languages. And considering that its a 2 hr film and that virtually all of these dvd releases have english subs inherently, its just not f-ing good enough!
One word:
Fansubs
Buy Japanese version and watch the fansubs from the internet.
You pay for it and you can watch better quality subs.
