On the suggestion of a few family members, I'm getting a new game system this winter. The HD systems have large back libraries of deeply discounted that I can justify throwing down for a second console. Additionally I'll be getting a good discount on it too, since my step-daughter works at Gamestop and get can an extra discount on used systems. So the cost isn't even a big deal anymore, though a 360 would still be cheaper. The libraries of the games I'm interested in are almost identical too. Really the difference actually comes in with the PSN vs. XBLA games. Basically it's coming down to "do I want to play Flower or Pac-Man?"
The wild card here is I'm also debating a new PC. I need a new one for work, though really I was going to wait until next summer. But 3 really good games are coming out next year on the PC that I want to get my hands on (and maybe DC Comic Universe too). Still, a good gaming PC may be a little too pricy and games I want to play on a PC don't come out too often. 2011 really is a fluke in that regard.
Anyway I'm open to suggestions if anyone has one. No decision will be made for another 2 months, but over the past month I've literally gone back and forth on this a dozen time already and neither console (or PC) has really stood out to the point where I've said "this is it" and I'm trying to find something that would sway me.
I dont know.
I would have said PS3 for blu-ray but I now have a bluray player and its no big shit compared to a good dvd player with decent upscaling. I think if you were to think 360 you would have to get a slim to have some sort of protection against the RROD.
Why don't you list your fave franchises and separate them into PS3 and 360 lists?
I'm building the list of games I want for each. I don't have any real favorites on the 360, though that's largely because I've never owned an MS console before. I guess the other question I should be asking is what system does everyone here have? I do want to be able to play with/against my friends and most of my non-VGpress friends play the 360, so that may be somethng to consider.
I dont really use my 360 online. No wireless.
I don't know what kind of games you enjoy, Robio, but based on your first post, I can definitely say that the 360 has the better library of downloadable games on XBLA.
Here are some exclusives for XBLA. Note that these are my personal favorites and what games I like:
XBLA
Multi-platform
And I know that PSN has these exclusives I'm interested in.
I don't know how much you like Treasure SHMUPs but they are exclusive to the 360. Radiant Silvergun and Bangai - O is coming out which is great news for me.
As far as the console and the retail games go, it depends on what you're looking for. Judging by our past discussions and posts here, it doesn't look like you enjoy online gaming or shooters. Obviously the 360 is the way to go if you want online shooters, sports, etc because of Live. The PS3 is definitely the way to go if you want the best first-party games on a console, other than Nintendo games of course. But I don't know if you're interested in Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, or even God of War III.
But the PS3 is the way to go for Japanese games like Last Guardian, Versus XIII, Demon's Souls, Project Dark, etc., and some niche ones like Disgaea 3 and Disgaea 4 that was leaked just recently. But the 360 has Tales of Vesperia and Lost Odyssey.
And finally as for fighting games, I know you said you wanted Super Street Fighter IV, well, any system will do for fighting games unless you want Dead or Alive 4.
That's about it. Hope that helps.
Oh, and one more thing. I played a lot of the PS3 at my cousin's house so I can honestly say that if I had to choose one console I would definitely go with the 360. Like I mentioned, the XBLA games is what sells me and although I hate paying for Live, the online experience feels better. But that's because I enjoy online gaming.
And the RRoD'ing should be a non-issue now with the Slim models. So you can purchase a 360 with more confidence!
But I'm being a little biased. But I think the bottom line is, you really can't go wrong with either system.
Avoid the PS3 or you might be tempted to buy The Last Guardian.
They still haven't fixed it, the system just cuts out if it overheats.
Have you thoyught about NOT updating or getting a new console and trying out Steam? They have plenty of old favorites and the good sales.
