Back in 1999 I was introduce to EverQuest.  I loved EQ.  An open-ended social gaming experience in a beautiful fantasy world.  It was everything I ever wanted in a game. To date, it had more impact on what games I play than possibly any other game.  I was never a classic MMORPG addict though. I think I one time played for 10 hours without stopping.  Most of the time I'd play in 4 hour bursts and I never really played in more than 2 or 3 month bursts before I'd get bored and put it away for a month or two and then start up again.

Lord know I enjoyed the hell out of it though.  There were plenty of frustrating moments where I'd nearly delete the account, but looking back on it I enjoyed the experience.  However, after about 2 years of off-and-on gaming I did finally hang up my gloves. I just couldn't keep up with the expansion packs, plus my PC wasn't up to speed.  I did actually get back into the game one last time in the early part of 2007 for about a week just to check it out, but at this point in the game most of the players are high-end and typically I would end up just playing by myself since there weren't many players at my level.

Anyway to make a very long story short I haven't played in over 2 years and I want to play again. Not EQ though.  Its too long in the tooth and not enough low levels to play with - though humorously enough they now have a server where players created characters that begin at level 50 to get around this issue.  Definitely not WoW.  I have enough forced interaction with simpletons on a daily basis. No need to force more on myself. I need something without quite so much mainstream appeal.

Of course I may not need anything at all. I know that an MMORPG probably isn't the best thing for me to get involved with. Even on a casual level it would be a time sink and I've got plenty of Wii and DS games to keep me busy.  Maybe all I'm missing is just some online gaming... of course with a Wii and DS I'm pretty much stuck without any options.  Bahhh. . . anyway I just need some people to tell me to resist and say DON'T DO IT!!!!!

But you do have options!

Phantasy Star 0 for the DS!

It's an MMORPG-lite. You can play with Ask and I (and eventually Vader)... and best of all:

Next time you go to McDonald's, you can take your DS with you to play while you wait on line! How cool would that be?

You can dress up in a pink Spiderman costume, put on a Sega t-shirt over that, wear red, high-top Sonic sneakers; you can secretly be wearing a Nintendo-thong underneath it all...

C'mon tell me that wouldn't be AWESOME?!

It's a lovely option, but I never really liked the Phantasy Star games. I've tried several times, but it's never clicked. Though I must admit I never pass up an excuse to go to McDonalds dressed in my pink Spider-Man costume.  Maybe I'll just go there an play Mario Kart instead.

Play WoW. Easily the easiest MMO to get out of that I've played TBH.
Just stay away from FIFA.

Stop. Your Harvest Moon leanings indicate that you are someone with an inability to control compulsive behavior. DO NOT START AN MMORPG.

MMOs are certainly something you devote yourself to for a good amount of time and the persistent online aspect is certainly a nice change of scenery. I've become a fanboi of space action MMOs like Jumpgate which has a sequel coming out probably next year. The thing I dislike about MMORPGs is the reliance on stats and the grinding to stay competitive against others.
