Captains log stardate 81116:

I am becoming suspious of this universe I am in. I am starting to see very strong patterns everywhere I go and I wonder if I am destined to repeat the same actions till I die. Each planet I go to has some form of life, no matter the distance from the sun, no matter which star I choose. They also all have bases, every single planet has been settled on already. All these bases look exactly alike and they have either an alien guy waiting to give me some gift or a computer terminal waiting to give me a waypoint. Each planet has a set of resources, some are found everywhere and some are more rare on certain planets. Also every planet seems to have one theme, not diverse like my home planet.

I also have noticed that every star system I have entered is like in a nebula or something because I have yet to see the blackness of space, it's always colorful up there. And I don't see the sun, I see planets in the system but where is the sun? I am starting to feel like I am in a parallel dimension where this universe is constructed my by a random algorithm rather than following natural rules.

As I explore my purpose for existing has become more clear. There seems to be this ancient race that ended up in a war with the sentinels which are those asshole robot police that keep bothering me while I mine. There are some legendary Heros mentioned and I am to be a follower of the atlas and do something. But there is another group, two strange beings that want me to follow them as well. How do I choose between them, I have no clue. I don't have a quest log, I have no way of knowing how to advance different quests. One quest notifications pop up on my HUD at a time and if always seems to be for atlas so that is what I do.

So I was on the crazy living plant planet and I finally got what I needed to power up my warp drive. I go to space and open my galactic map at which point that one quest notification tells me to hit the next system on my trek to the center of the universe. So I mark it, hit engage and I am off. I appear in a new star system, this one has two planets and one moon. Of course there is a space station, there is always a space station and hey it looks the same!

A distress call?! OMG something is happening, a freighter is under attack by space pirates and they need my help, let's do this! I zoom toward the freighter like a hero and I see 9 enemy ships?! Well let's see how this goes, I fire at one and three break off at me, ahhhh too many lasers from all sides, my shields are getting hammered. I fire my guns which have a sort of auto lock as long as I aim in the general market that shows where I should be aiming. I killed one but I am taking a beating. To recharge shields I have to go into my menu mid fight and feed my shields the resource it needs. I boost the hell out of there, two ships follow me, sorry frieghter I suck as a hero. I manage to escape and head to the planet with my next market which is some temple.

Woah this planet is colorful, it's green and orange and has loads of plants. I took pictures but forgot to upload all of them. I get to the temple and it looks like most other monolith shrines but this one has a floating ball that basically tells me to swear allegiance to atlas, sure why not, what else am I going to do. So I am to go to the next star system, time to find resources to power the hyperdrive again, this time I got a marker for a base that has the recipe for one of the components so I can easily make warp cells, ok so I go there. The door is locked so I had to blow it up, some sentinels got pissed so I killed them, easy. Huh this planet has a new race of alien! These are robots and they speak a different language, great now I need to learn more words. I need Rosetta Stone. Got the recipe and now I have a marker at the next system, let's go.

And I arrive, another distress call, another group of pirates, too many for me. I need a new ship, I can buy a better one but I rather save up and buy a major upgrade. Another marker to visit, this seems to be my life right now, chasing markers. That said I am oddly compelled to keep going, and make money, I like making money. I need to learn to make more money off of all this mining I do, I am too much of a hoarder, why hoard stuff when everywhere I go there is plenty of it. I expect to make some major advances to my equipment next, hopefully it leads to better adventures.

Waiting for PC version, but I'll probably just try out Elite Dangerous instead.

I shouldn't like this game. Collecting resources is repetitive, managing inventory sucks, story is limited, and the game play in general lacks any real depth. It does remind me of minecraft, but at least in minecraft you get a sense of accomplishment by creating something. You don't get that in No Man's Sky. There are glitches that bring down the experience that make completing some objectives near impossible, and space combat? Not impressed.

And yet....I find myself coming back to it. I'm always fascinated by the next planet. What type of planet it will be(found my first "earth" type!) and what I will find there. This game has taken a lot of heat from the gaming community and I can see why, but I'm really enjoying the game despite it's obvious shortcomings.

Captains log stardate 81216:

Progress. Well a little progress. I decided to upgrade my equipment today and made it my mission to do so. I got more focused to simply hit the major points of interest which could get me what I need and only stop to get resources that I need or are valuable for trade. I finally found a much needed suit upgrade by following an unknown checkpoint. I reach a base with an alien that gave me schematics for an upgraded hyperdrive! Now I just need the material to make it.

At a space station I bought a new ship, lots more space and a bit tougher. My gun has some upgrades and can become a shotgun or rifle. Not that I have much use for it, sentinels have been very simple floating robots so far.

I jumped to the next galaxy in my path toward the atlas monument where I assume I will get one of these keys that everything seems to be locked by. I found a planet with a new advanced alien race, these guys seem to be obsessed with money. Got some more upgrades but still kind find the resource to build that hyperdrive. Time to planet hop.

All these planets are blending together, sure some are impressive but there is no mystery to them, just fly around hitting points of interest. Take a few picture of some weird ass creatures. Repeat.

Got a distress call, another pirate attack, this time only three ships, I can take them. So I engage, it's a fierce battle but I manage to kill two before sentinel ships arrive, wtf there is space police too. I'm trying to help damn it!!! I kill the last pirate ship but the sentinels are all over my ass. I am out of shields, I am trying to make it to the planet that is so close, my boost is disabled due to combat. Bah I'm dead, now I have to fly back and gather my dead body remains. Thankfully I am immortal.

That's about the most excitement I had, other than that it's the usual. That said the desire to make money, upgrade and be able to move easier around the Galaxy is great.

Reviews pouring out. Metacritic if 69. Sound about right. I say it’s a 6 at best. Others will love it many will hate it. I just don’t see anything good enough to say this is a good game, it’s not. It’s an interesting game, a repetitive one that’s missing any of the core elements that make the best games great.

My favorite planet so far. UNiversity of Miami colors so I named it UMCanes.

The most disturbing creature I have seen. I named it edgeasshole. Notice the planet name below.

Nice lush planet.

Crazy moving plant planet, this thing has eyes under the plant.

After what you've written, what I've read on GAF and some review sites I can say my interest is gone. The only aliens I'll be coming into contact with are Klingons when I crumple up my interest in this game and wipe my ass with it, just before I flush it down the toilet.

I always got kind of a Minecraft vibe from it, but Minecraft is only $20 or less. Maybe I will look into it once there is a steep discount. At any rate I have enjoyed what you have written and will continue to read.

Oh also Time Magazine gave the game a 4.5 out of 5. This is the same publication that made Prune its game of the year last year. Just saying...

On phone so this will be short, like usual.

But I'll say that although as others have said the game is lacking in direction & core progression elements that you expect, I can definitely appreciate what they have done here. It's an interesting concept & one I think that can be a building block for more fleshed out experiences going forward.

The basic structure of exploration is great. It feels like a cross between Firewatch & Metroid Prime. Its just that it lacks any of metroid's deeper game play. Graphic style reminds me of Firewatch which I love.

The seamless world itself of planet hopping exploration is pretty nifty & unprecedented. Something that I hope othrts run with, perhaps in something like Mass Effect. This game though can feel like an Elder Scrolls sandbox demo.

I see myself messing with this in my downtime between other games for a while.
