I watched 11 episodes of Gurren Lagann today. Great anime, for sure. Not quite as bat-shit crazy as Kill la Kill, but its definitely up there in the insanity department.

Keep watching it will go batshit insane soon enough!

It certainly has indeed!

Watched these, gave up on Azumi Daioh within 15 minutes, ewwww. Claymore was decent, reminded me of Blood the Last Vampire. Bleach season 10 continues to impress.

Claymore gets much much better as it goes on. At least that's the case with the manga.

Saw more Claymore, like it a lot. Nice to see a more consistent and serious anime. Saw the first 3 eps of Sword Art Online, it's pretty decent but not gripping me so far.

SAO takes a while to get really good. I think I became hooked around ep 5.

I was confused, the lead character beta tester seemed like a good guy. Then when they beat the level 1 boss he acted like a jerk. Why? Was he putting it on? If so why? Everything before led us to believe he was a decent bloke.

Kirito is a good guy. He did that because he feared the other players would attack him for being a beta tester. Other beta testers had used their prior knowledge of the game to gain a huge advantage over the other players, keeping the best weapons, armor, and supplies for themselves. Many normal players had died because of the other beta testers selfishness. Normal players now consider them cheaters, and begun to hate them. Kirito knows that if a player dies in SAO, they also die in the real world, so he acted like a jerk hoping they would fear his abilities, and not attack. If they attacked him, then he would have no choice but to defend himself, which means he would be forced to kill real people to survive.

It's very difficult to reason with an angry mob.

Gurren Lagann flag

Holy shit! Hiroyuki Imaishi (Director) and Kazuki Nakashima (Writer) are anime gods! They blew my fucking mind  . . . TWICE! First with Kill La Kill, and now with Gurren Lagann. I just finished Gurren Lagann. If you have not seen this anime, then you owe it to yourself to do so! Cool

Finished 7 eps of Sword Art Online, it's decent but not rocking my world.

SOA is a slower anime. I really enjoyed it, but, yeah, it's certainly not going to rock anyone's world either. I liked the characters, and wanted to see what happened to them.

I like the whole virtual fantasy world elements, but at the same time it can feel a tad... gimmicky, I guess? Like these rpg quirks maybe get in the way of proper fantasy world storytelling. They're a bit distracting. I hope there's an episode set in the real world showing what everyone else is going through. BTW how is everyone surviving with no food or water in the real world?

Are there any story arcs or is it mainly episodic in nature?

Yeah, it starts out very episodic, but there are two major story arcs, first of which you are already well into watching--it'll make more sense further in. Episodes 15-25 is all one big story arc, and it has a lot more real world interactions as well.

It's explained in episode 14, but if you really want to know now here's the minor spoiler: They are all in hospitals, being kept alive like coma patients.
